Which Ride?

Big news from RAM: the return of the Rumblebee muscle truck in 3 flavors: the 5.7L / 395 HP HEMI, (finally) the 6.4L / 470 HP HEMI and the Supercharged 6.2L / 777 HP Hellcat HEMI.

Interesting that both the mild-hybrid e-torque system and auto start/stop have been discontinued as needless complexity in the pursuit of .1 mpg.

Ferrari are idiots. Just look at what Corvette has done with EV technology, yet not compromised the spirit of their car. This might as well be a Tesla Model Y. I mean why would you pay $600k for the same car you could get for whatever a Y is (I'm sure it is a fraction of the price, maybe even less than 1/6 of it by now)? And the timing couldn't be worse. The euro market is being flooded with boutique brands, Kimera and HWA (though that one has a direct AMG bloodline) come to mind as direct competitors in the same space. Not to mention the less wholly-new "resto-mod" market. I can get a lot of car for $600k, that is way more fun than some stupid vaguely GT EV coupe. Is it a 2+2 as well? They have a long history of underperforming with that seating arrangement. Sometimes I imagine that these offerings are specifically intended to kill the EV branch of a given company. It seems that several US and euro manufacturers have done just that. Intentional might be conspiratorial thinking, but they are at least underfunded and set up for failure in many cases.

It’s times like this that I miss Top Gear (the original, with Jeremy Clarkson).

They knew how to properly evaluate a car. :D

So...I saw Clarkson's social media announcement several months ago about starting Grand Tour back up, but I didn't know who any of the people were that he introduced. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when "the algorithm" started feeding me the YT channel "Throttle House" (probably because I started seriously researching bolt-on mods for my M235). I had since learned that those guys are 2/3s of the new people so I decided to watch one...and I'm kind of excited.

They have their own humor, but you can tell they grew up with TG as well, and a lot of that show has rubbed off on them. I recommend the channel, but I also have some hope for the Grand Tour reboot. I think it will be a different format, and that's okay.

I’ll check it out. I haven’t looked into this in a while, since the OG Grand Tour petered out.

Noticed that GM, Toyota and a number of other manufacturers are having engines grenade, and this seems to correspond to a switch in oil to 0W-20 oil from previous 5W-20 (although some reports have manufacturers running 5W-20 in the same engines overseas.). Anybody have insights into this? Coincidence or correlation?
With previous administrations trying to force Americans out of full size V-8’s but consumers voting the opposite at showroom floors, manufacturers were stuck trying to maximize fuel economy. Cylinder deactivation, start/stop, partial hybrid systems all increased complexity / price for minimal returns and reduced reliability. One of these examples appears to be the thinning of engine oils to meet govt CAFE standards - looks like GM is reversing the trend by going to thicker oil in their new V-8 engines (RAM is dropping eTorque mild hybrid and also start/stop)

On the flip side, those economy measures have given us amazing developments like multi-speed (i.e. more than 5 gears) automatic transmissions, widespread adoption of variable cam timing, widespread adoption of forced induction, and gasoline direct injection. It's not all bad!

Except CVTs, though - those are bad.

My takeaway from this, China's eating our lunch with their EV's.

100%. Other than for boutique corner cases for enthusiasts, the production of Big bore V8 motors is borderline immoral. Electrification of transport and electrification of day-to-day life support, for example, heating and cooling our homes and electrifying. Our daily transport needs is a moral imperative and our long-term survival depends on it.

There should be some degree of slut shaming with regards to the purchase and operation of Big bore internal combustion.

Ehhh…I have a buddy from the Corps who retired to the Philippines. Last year he bought a BYD Sealion and genuinely regrets the decision. He notes the cockpit technology is fantastic, to the degree it can tell if he or his wife sit in the drivers seat and adjusts accordingly. The joy ends there. He notes countless mechanical issues, extremely poor craftsmanship, and zero dealer support (as in no none of the dealers have repair shops). As he put it, he bought a $12K SUV that lasted just over a year. He notes that a Tesla Model Y (comparable in size) costs about five times more but is likely to last 10 times longer.

I do agree that China is beating us at the EV software game but I’m not convinced their quality (or safety standards) are even close to those EVs readily available in the U.S. On the order hand I’m very interested in new sodium battery technology and the EREV (extended range electric vehicle) concepts coming to dealerships in the next few years.

Is that a joke?
