Which Ride?

EV adoption will largely be a middle to upper class thing in the USA for a few reasons....Where this really gets crummy is for those people who don't have at home charging solutions. They don't save much money over fuel, and the convenience factor isn't there. So you have either be an EV enthusiast, or have chargers available at your place of business.

L1 charging works for some people who have the convenience of a 110/120 outlet access for their car at home or work, and only drive less than 20 miles a day...An L2 charger is about equivalent to having wiring for an electrical cloths dryer or oven, right? Large appliance?

Until we get cheaper, better quality EREV's I think there is an upper limit to adoption for EV's in this country as you say simply because of the practicalities. But that said, I think the ceiling is a lot higher than it is now.

My understanding is you can get 30-50 miles of charge into a car overnight with an L1 charger. You can also take it with you and plug it in wherever you go, i.e., camping at a site with electricity.

That is right about what I'm getting with a regular extension cord with my PHEV. In order to get an L2 installed, usually their plug is the same as a dryer's, I would have also had to upgrade my electrical panel for a total cost of $2500-$4000.

How about a normal-sized, paid off truck that gets 28mpg on diesel and gets routinely loaded up with stuff and used as a truck?

You have an excellent point though- owning a pickup is the financial equivalent of a low to mid-level luxury vehicle (or a typical EV in terms of acquisition cost). A lot of the big pickup crowd is leveraged to the hilt with debt and depreciation.

Want a truck? Go ahead and get one, but when you slap a sticker blaming a previous President for rising gas prices on your lifted custom pavement princess with an illegally mod'd exhaust and ~26 inch chrome rims that never has a speck of dirt on it when I walk by it almost every day because you just have to park in the handicapped spot right by the front door...don't be surprised if I give you shit for whining about how much your dumb ass is paying for it per month.

I have several coworkers that use them for towing their trailer, moving around arcade games, fishing and hunting or just hauling ass and trash but do at least 50% who drive them to work do so in my very urban/suburban area? I have my doubts.

The truck is real BTW, I don't know the driver though.

Dead serious.

Have you seen the wildfires in Europe? Canada?

We need to vilify hydrocarbon consumption consumption for consumer use. That means penalizing individual citizens who are heating their homes with natural gas or oil as an example.

We are having an illegal war with Iran. It's is holding the whole world hostage over oil flow via the Straights.

What's the alternative? The planet is burning. We are on the road to extinction unless we use the power of government to change individual citizen behavior.

What's is the alternative? Our grandchildren are at mortal risk.

Do you see a positive upside to our demand for energy that comes from
Hyperbole! So I guess us in rural America are on your hate list. I have lots of battery powered stuff on my farm but moving around trailers and horses ain’t happening without a truck! And as discussed before, the technology ain’t mature.

And frankly, it’s America. We just celebrated 250 years of freedom and here you are saying you want to restrict freedoms and shame those that don’t agree with you! No thanks Comrade!

We just bought a Honda Passport for my wife, strictly internal combustion, she spent weeks and weeks studying that versus a Landcruiser, which one better performs on the most heinous tracks and beaches, lift kits, 4WD modes, etc.

It mostly sits in our garage with nary a speck of dirt on it. Her baby.

Because I regularly use the bed space in my truck to move things around. With kids approaching college and an aging father, I doubt the need to help my family move stuff is going away anytime soon.

It’s also bought and paid for. Why would I spend money on another vehicle when I have what I need & like already?

Don’t worry, next time I’m in the market, electrics will get a look. Hopefully they will have matured a bit by then.
