Flight School backed up

I know a stashed ENS who is the Party-O for his squadron. He organizes the parties.
Done well, this could be more of a career builder than some would give it credit for . . . especially if you end up back in the same community post-flight school.

Done well, you’re showing all the squadron JOs (i.e. potentially some of your future RAG instructors) that you aren’t a stick in the mud. But you’re also showing the front office you’re someone who’s mature enough to know the limits of what’s OK for a unit function, and not some frat party-obsessed alcoholic douche who’s trying to relive undergrad.

There are three kinds of capital you can draw from to build your rep in the FITREP 500. Your skill in the cockpit, your skill at your ground job, and your ability to be someone who makes the squadron a more fun place to be.

The last will never overrule the first two if you suck at them. You can’t drink or socialize your way out of being competent at your job. But if you don’t, it’s absolutely a tiebreaker. And this goes for the private sector, too. People want to work with people who are good at what they do, but assuming that, they’d also much rather work with people who are fun to work with.

Yeah, but Congress was in charge of what to BRAC/replace . . . with the stroke of a Presidential pen, we could have had a Master Training Base in/around El Centro, Yuma, White Sands, or somesuch.

Yes and no, it takes A LOT of money to build up the necessary infrastructure and all the needed support both on and off base for something like that. And in today's environment, or the 90's for that matter, to do that from 'scratch' is/was just not going to happen.

The other factor I wonder about is length of syllabus, as compared to prior generations.

It's been years since I read Dumb But Lucky about a P-51 pilot in WWII in the European theater, but I vaguely remember the number of training hours as around 14 training hours before they were like "alright, let's get you into a P-51 and do this thing."

From what I've seen some new ensigns are being sent to squadrons of their choice for the wait. Should be interesting for avgeeks as I am sure many are, and an enriching educational experience for getting ahead of flight school should they choose to take advantage of their colleagues' knowledge.
Interesting. My next door neighbor recently PCS'd from NPS and she mentioned there were a glut of ENS's waiting to start flight school being sent there for their Master's first. Sweet gig if you can get it.

I know a couple of studs who went to NPS before going to Pensacola. Definitely wish I had that opportunity. Sounds like an awesome deal for those who can get it.

Is there anything an ensign can do should this problem prevail to May commissioning? Im YG '23 nrotc and would love to pursue this.

Totally on the same page, I just wasn't sure if there was a process or application that was a known pathway for NPS. I'm getting ahead of myself, just hoping to select aviation and commission at this point :).

You don’t “apply” for NPS, it’s usually meant to be a shore duty option after completing your first sea tour/s.

USNA and NROTC does send some “exceptional” ENS there for grad school after commissioning. When I was in NROTC we had one guy go direct to NPS to get an MS in Mech E. He had a 4.0 GPA all throughout college for perspective.

Depending on the relationship you have with your unit staff (and assuming there's still a huge delay), once you get your orders, you might be able to work with your commissioning staff officer and he can put a feeler out to the detailer. You probably wouldn't get an ORDMOD out of ROTC, but at least you could find out if it's something they're doing out of Schools Command.

Once at Schools Command, and after getting whatever pre-NIFE admin they require done, you could probably poke around STUCON and see how to make it happen. I'm guessing it's something that gets advertised and they see who's interested.

There were some NPS guys that came through in 2006-2007 when I was an IP. I don't think it really hurt them because so many other people were held up, but it did make their career timing a little more crunched.

Our unit staff put out a feeler for doing the NPS before going to NASC sometime during our 1/C year. There are a few people down here who did it.

Like so many things related to NROTC — talk to your advisor/aviation officer.

Best of luck with service selection.

I went to NPS after USNA and it was a great deal. That said, it put me a year behind my peers. That year delay, coupled with normal flight school timing, it trickled down and I didn’t have the timing to get the high water needed going into my O-4 board. I FOS’d first look for O-4. Luckily I made it second go around.
