Got turned onto "bury my heart" at the beginning of the year because I finished up a couple books about Custer and Crazy Horse right at the end of last year. Overall I don't disagree with your take.
To be fair it is bad work on my part to not recommend a book. That period is my primary area of study and I hate to see people put off it by certain works. Read it, for Brown has a great style, but back stop it with other less emotional works.

I'm about halfway through Sandworm. Covers some major cyber attacks since the 00s including Stuxnet, Wannacry, and Notpetya with emphasis on the effects in eastern Europe (particularly Ukraine) that were never reported on well in the US. I knew of the domestic impacts of Notpetya domestically (e.g. Maersk), but many of the downstream effects and risks it exposed to the logistical "just in time" model, which has been heavily adopted in the US, astounded me and I have worked in cyber for a while. Great read whether or not you're in a technical field.

Cormac McCarthy is the monster under every grown man's bed.
Did you see the movie The Counselor? He wrote the script himself, so it is unfiltered Cormac-y goodness. There’s this snippet of dialog that I think would go well in a fitrep debrief...

I would urge you to see the truth in your situation, LT. That is my advice. It is not for me to say what you should have done. Or not done. I only know that the world in which they are are made. You are at a cross in the road and here you think to choose. But there is no choosing. There is only accepting. The choosing was done long ago.

Big McCarthy fan here. I really wanted to like The Counselor, but it just didn't resonate with me for some reason. Maybe I'll give it another chance.

During my commute, I re-read (or listened to) Blood Meridian recently. I think my favorites are All the Pretty Horses, and No Country. They seem to get more detailed look into the characters and their relationships. I need to read some of his older stuff. Any recommendations?

Blood Meridian is the earliest work of his I've read and I'm not familiar with the older ones. I got started with his works via No Country and then The Road. Then turns out Mrs. Pags had the border trilogy on our shelf. But I've yet to read his older works.

I read The Road before Blood Meridian. Good prep? Haven’t tried any others. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen The Counselor stem to stern, it’s one of those movies I’ve seen in 15 minute chunks while repeatedly channel surfing.

Been meaning to read True Grit. It’s on my todo list.

I'm reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Haven't read it since junior high.

Like I said before, if you think The Road is crazy, just wait til you read Blood Meridian. You know the part in The Road where they come across the bad guys on the highway? Blood Meridian is about those guys but in the old west. Oh, and those guys hang out with Judge Holden. Who is just a fantastic villian.

As I recently re-read it, The Judge took on a satanic dimension for me.

To me the judge = devil. There is some writing online with re to that question, and McCarthy is religious as well. What is interesting is how similar the events in “Rampage”, a book about the actual destruction and war crimes that took place during the retaking of the city of Manila during WW2 are to some of the events that take place during Blood Meridian.

I also see a fair amount of similarity between Holden and Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.

Blood Meridian is ostensibly based (loosely) on historical events.
