Civilians and flight jackets.

They weren't issuing leather at that time.
Well, that shouldn't be on your head. I'm assuming you should have been issued leather (was there some policy saying aircrew only got nomex at that time?), so you should be fine getting one now on your own dime. Even if there was a policy then, and it isn't in effect now, you should still be fine.

I guess I'll ask for the group's opinion on this one. I have a green Nomex flight jacket that was issued to me when I was an aircrewman. I still have my squadron name tag, squadron patch, airwing patch and ship patches for Independance and Forrestal (deployed on both). My jacket is getting kind of worse for wear and I was thinking about buying a leather flight jacket and transferring my tag and patches to it. Any gripes?

None. If you did the deployments and rate wings then show them off. It would be a shame to lose them.

I got my dad a reproduction of his Nomex jacket from the 60's complete with Wasp patch and aircrew wings. He loves it.

I plan on giving my son my leather jacket when he gets old enough. I guess that might fall in that grey area..unless he follows in my footsteps.

Am I the only one who wants to beat up hippies when they "ironically" wear field jackets?

I once saw a hippie smoking out of a hooka with a US Marine dress blue jacket with Lance Corporal rank on. It boiled the blood

I don't think there's any problem at all in a Granpa-Dad-Son (daughter?) hand-me-down scenario ... if anything, it's a tribute to your heritage and the family service to the Country. It honors "them" ... and mebbe it WILL encourage the 'juniors' to follow in the family military tradition.

Way, way different than your garden variety civie' guy goin' out and buying 'been there' patches ...

Wow...after reading this thread I kinda feel like a douche...I've been lurking here awhile, my father was in HS-11 aboard USS Wasp and that instilled in me quite a love for Naval Aviation.
So a few years ago I purchased a flight jacket with a USS Wasp patch, I have been asked before if that was my ship, the poor guy who asks that usually gets a history of the Wasp and my dad...BTW I have civilian wings on my jacket as per the pic.
So I never thought it was such an issue, I'm considering removing the patch to avoid any insult or appearance that I'm skeeterman jr. , any suggestions?

Just realized that this pic is an old one without the civi wings....lol

I think it is an appropriate honor for your father and I see nothing wrong with it. As long as you don't wax nostalgic about your time on the big gray boat ;). Wear it with pride!

Maybe it's a good thing that I have retired that now rotting Flying Tigers jacket. But it always made me feel better to wear it when times were going bad. I really admired the Flying Tiger who gave me the patch, Scotty Sapiro, although he wasn't my grandpa. (I hope that I'm in that kind of shape when I'm in my late 90s.)

For all the people who chased me down the street to ask where I got that jacket, not one was ever offended that I was clearly not a Flying Tiger, nor did anyone ever suspect that I had been.

Had I been a guy dressed up in a stranger's jacket, possibily to fake out women, like the guy in the original post, that would be on the creepy side.

I'm no hippie, but... PSW and I had a Hookah set up on the back porch at our wedding reception, and I have photographic evidence that I smoked it while wearing dress blues... Does that boil the blood? ;)

Hand-Me-Up Scenario

I did just the opposite while I was still AD. I had collected 3 leather jackets over the years... (Every squadron I flew with as aircrew, except for the last (VP-6), either decomm'ed or changed home ports.) I had a nametag made up and (with wings) and sewed on one of the jackets for my step-dad. He is a Naval Aviator from the Korean War era and flew most of the single engine stuff from that time. He still has the jacket.

Back on track: anyone wear a Vietnam era G-8 Flight jacket (also called 1G8WEP - Marine Corp WEP Jacket)?

I just got back from a few days on The Boat (first time on The Boat) and a whole lot of the air department bubbas were wearing these. I'd heard y'all talk about it on here, but I've never seen a single soul in my community wear one. Must be a tailhook/fixed wing thing.

Some folks I know have the nomex/fleece MCPS. It's great gear from the reviews.

Are those issued by individual squadrons or is that something people pick up on their own dime?

Seems like not a lot of people would need them but it's awfully pricey.

depends on the squadron....but, ideally, your squadron gets them for you. but they're $$$, so not all squadrons have the cash for them.

well this was a long haired, bearded hippie with jeans and sandals wearing a Marine dress blue jacket with LCPL stripes, and he was smoking weed out of that hookah. I truly, truly hope that wasnt you... :D

But i know it wasnt you, I called the cops on him and the last I saw was them confiscating his weed and hookah and escorting him out the building to have a little talk.

Looks familiar. But it might be a different old jacket than mine.

And I would wear mine today.......if I could still fit in it. :(
I would also be proud to give it to my son, but he does not feel it appropriate for him to wear it. I disagree, but that is OK.

During Vietnam, old military uniform apparal were in high demand by hippies and they wore pieces of them often. But it was always obvious they never deserved or honored them.

I have no problem with a civilian today wearing a flight jacket with legitmate and important patches, as long as when asked, he can give an honest and good reason for wearing it. Two or three questions can usually separate the honest from the poser.

PS: How come I only got one, while A4s sez he gots 3. A4s needs to send me one of his to be even, eh? And don't send me one with cigarette burn holes. I want the pristine one. :D
