You'll also have to shell out a little bit for your class hoodie and t-shirt. Depending on the season, you might have to go short and long sleeved. Some classes even made sweatpants, but when I was there, most didn't. The costs will vary as they will be custom designs.

Your BAS - allowance for food - will automatically be deducted. Laundry, like stretch_29 said, you'll just need to buy detergent. Also, be prepared to spend quite a bit on the pregraduation dinner, class coins, and like LFCfan said class hoodies, tshirts, sweats, and some classes also get shorts. Trust me, these things add up quickly. Especially if you plan on getting extra for family members or friends.

When you say "Spend quite a bit," is that money that I'll actually be spending (I.E. money exiting my bank account), or money that will be charged to me once I graduate? I'm just curious to know how we're billed for expenses like that while in training.

Money existing in your bank account. Also, if you're at the NEX and want any extra uniform items, you'll be able to throw those on your student account up to a certain point. Once you graduate you'll have paid off your account and shouldn't have any extra expenses to worry about.

Who picks the nicknames for the backs of the Candio class PT shirts? Is it the DIs? Is anyone ever really disappointed with their nicknames? They usually seem pretty witty, but I've also seen some pretty lame nicknames in the Hi-Moms videos that are on youtube. Like calling the guy named Smith, "Smithy".

Curious about this too.

You pick what you want for a nickname shirt if you want one. Name must be approved by class team so it's not inappropriate.

This is going to seem like a weird question, but there appear to be a lot of family-oriented events near the end of OCS. I saw on the OTC Newport facebook page that there is some kind of pre-graduation dinner where families show up. How weird would it be if someone just didn't have any family there? Are friends allowed to come?

What other OCS events are there that would make someone feel weird without family present? Hi Mom is just some video they make, right, and otherwise it's just stuff that families can be present at / watch, but don't participate?

Hi-Moms IS the pre-grad dinner.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll re-word my question:

Is it weird to not have any family show up for Hi-Moms? Are friends allowed to come instead? How many? And are there any other events that go beyond your family simply being allowed to be there and observe?

You get to choose? Well that's lame. Half the fun is getting something that is completely stupid yet fitting.

You can have whoever you want come. One guy in my class didn't have anyone come though. Kinda sucked for him I guess.

When I was there a year+ ago there was pass in review (parade thing in the gym you might have seen on FB), hi-moms that night, and then graduation Friday morning. There is usually a grad run, chow hall demo, or something else at some godawful early hour (at least for your family) that family and friends can come watch before graduation.

It's another shirt that you pay extra for yourself. Pretty much everyone who got one was a nickname that was given at OCS. I opted to only get one with my name.

I've noticed that a more recent class that went through OCS got to go on a "class trip" to Boston...in other classes, a trip to Boston was not described as a class trip but as liberty. Does every class get a class trip traditionally? Or is this something new? Or perhaps just due to the time of year of this class? In any case, most classes I've seen have pics on the USS Constitution.
