Here's a quick flaming arrow to get the discussion back on track with the title of the thread:

The H-60 is just a miniature H-53. Discuss.

With out the static discharge. ;)

@hscs (who won't admit what he flys/dreams about flying) or anyone else that hates on the VERTREP...simple instructions below:

1) Earn your wings
2) Continue "practicing" your mission
2a) Hate on those not like you.
3) Rinse.
4) Repeat as necessary (for at least your 3 flying tours).

Any deviations from said instructions will result in the starboard D pattern that never ends...'cause we love that! No helos, no heroes baby!

edit: "There's a third page???" Holy cow, a helo discussion on AW that lasts 3 pages!? It is a great mission...and it's a lot of fun. I never said it was the end all, be all of missions. I fly a mini-van. It might as well have a big soccer ball decal on the side of the damn thing...I didn't care. I loved what I do. Stop hating on my enjoyment and start braggin' about your own...if you have nothing to brag about...don't be such a shoe and hate on everyone else!!!! Go drink to your own misery/look for someone else to stab in the back. I don't care. Just have fun for God's sake!!!! Plus arguing online is like running in the special olympics...

I am a hater, and you are making fun of the special olympics!? not sure that I follow that.

I do have my wings, and I was merely trying to make a point that I don't think the sideflare is very safe in a tail rotor a/c, and that there are better things to be focusing on right now during the GWOT. There are a lot of things going on that need helo help -- Air Ambulance is just the first. More is coming down the pipe. With the contract VERTREP online -- we need move assets to other missions.

And back on original target -- heard the S92 was underpowered, but agree it would be far better suited to streaming AMCM gear. Still not sure how the engineers are going to make it work on the 60S.

That's the reference.

From a buddy who is doing the 60S OAMCM test and eval down in Panama City - the stream and tow gear is on the left side and then goes through a... I forget the term, but a grommet or whatever that is attached to the trailing edge of the fuselage, just below the tailboom and then to the sled. The rest of the package (RAMICS, etc.) I have no idea about.

You're about to be a hater when you start streaming gear out of your helo into the water and then pulling it through the water. No plans for the S92 for any future AMCM use. Only plans I have heard are for the 60 to make AMCM work. Who really knows what will happen to dedicated AMCM.

Is their an "AutoShear" in case of engine failure on the tow gear on the 60?

I think they have to manually jettison or "pickle" it. We do too. We just have more power to keep airborne (in most cases) if we have to get rid of the gear.

I remember them saying that with the -60, pulling a sled, you had .7 seconds to cut or go in water with a single engine failure.

Not sure if thery were full off bull or not. Ideas?

Yeah, that's the idea, right now at least... HSC provides organic AMCM until the 53s/minesweepers can get there.

There is no “sled” (MK 105) for the 60. Completely different systems for the 60. Not sure about the .7 stuff I havent heard that.

Dedicated will be around for a while, I have heard that glass cockpit is coming for the 53.

You probably don't fly a 60S. I've talked about the T/R authority before...I'm not going to again...

Either way...the Air Ambulance mission is a good one, just not very conducive to having Blue-water assets doing it...talk about better aircraft availible. It's just like our relief missions in the Pakistan Mountains...it was good flying, just not for Naval aircraft.

The 60S is just fine for the Pakistani Mts. as long as you know what you're doing. That little thing in the back called a tail rotor makes it a little more varsity than being at sea level. As far as Air Ambulance goes, the HH is a much more capable overland aircraft than the average UH-60.
