Which Ride?

Current lineup is my e30 M3 which is pretty well sorted out, other than a few preventative MX items I need to address after far too many years of getting lucky. Other garage queen is the new-to-me 1995 SL500 I picked up this fall, 37XXX miles, nearly perfect condition, I have a ton of projects planned for that one. Driveway and airport b***tch car is a 2003 Mercedes C-class wagon. Doing a lot of heavy maintenance on that one, since it has 170k miles and I hope to get it to at least 500k. One thing I have noticed both with that car, as well as the SL500, is parts availability. Major use MX items are pretty available, but some of the lesser used stuff without other model commonality is becoming extremely hard to come by.....think things like the hood mat/insulation for the SL, or a driver side door interior pull handle on the C wagon. Not nearly as much of an issue for the e30, I think since the demand is still out there pretty heavily. I really hate buying Chinese knock off crap, but that is starting to become the only option for some stuff on the Mercedes classic side, other than fabricating it yourself or refurbishing existing parts from the car. I do have a couple good EU contacts who can hunt for more esoteric Euro market items for me, but it's pretty cost prohibitive for regular replacement things that aren't bigger ticket items (period correct Brabus exhaust and euro market headlights for example of my most recent search). Wife DD is a '23 Honda Pilot that is thankfully trouble free and just goes.

Is the auto a DSG?

BMW uses a ZF 8-speed and it's pretty impressive system. I have the same basic gear box in my F22 M235. 1st to 2nd has a very slight delay, but you really only see that starting off from a light, and if you want, you can start in second. But from 2nd to 8th, it is lightning quick.

Back when I bought mine, you could still get the manual version. Up until then, I had always owned a manual. I ended up going with the auto because it was actually more fun than the (IMO) floppiness of the manual shifter. I'm in manual mode on my auto 99.5% of the time...probably more than that since I don't go to a military base much anymore.

How is the software stack?

I'm currently in a 2025 228i XDrive loaner car (more on why later) and I find the new system to be laborious. I'm guessing Llarry has some more hard-button options in his much fancier car, but BMW has moved almost all of the functions to the touch screen, which is a pain to have to move through while driving. They've also locked down all of the user aids behind 5 menus of tapping. For example, I hate adaptive cruise control, but the only way to turn it off in this 228 is to go through 5 screens of menus to turn it of, every. single. time.

The cars are still amazing to take a corner in, and I'd happily take a M240i if you were giving me one, but BMW has really lost me as a customer with how "consumer" they've made their cars inside.

I thought you had an e46 M3. Relevant when I share my saga once I get my car back this week...hopefully Thursday after I get off work.

I've been very lucky as well, until now...but it may have a silver lining...

No, never have owned an e46, though I'd be amenable to it. Car #2 used to be an e92 M3, but I sold that in 2019. Have had the e30 since I was in the RAG though.

You've piqued my interest, do tell!
