Which Ride?

Interesting article affecting all software connected cars, not just electric cars. What happens as the software goes obsolete / unsupported?

Dealer wanted $299 for a software update to my car's infotainment system the last time I went in for service, no thanks. But yeah, that is the future to a large degree unless government regulators step in or consumers choose/demand other options.

My wife has an 1990s Toyota Avalon with a built-in navigation system based on a database on some sort of digital storage in the trunk. It is of course missing tons of new roads and have some other roads in it that are just not there anymore. It’s worse than not having a navigation aid at all..

Ford wants over 1K to update GPS Nav on our 22 Explorer. Nope.

As a owner of a 2023 Tesla, it will be interesting to see how the issue gets addressed. Up to now. The product management of the software has been brilliant I think. Having a software defined vehicle and then getting features and capabilities exposed through software updates has been an incredible value add. In addition, they seem to take customer input seriously and then flow that into updates and improvements.

The limiting factor will be of course the power where I should say horsepower of the installed hardware and at least in my model. 3. I do not believe there's any path to upgrading the compute capacity of the car.

I've got almost 50,000 mi since I took delivery of the vehicle and I expect I will get 10 years out of this car. At some point everything will hit end of life as far as support just like any other computer

I have a Tesla, which is not without its faults - either the car or the manufacturer.

But it's wild to see how much the legacy manufacturers hate their customers...
To whit - this podcast with GM CEO Mary Barra. GM is so fucking out of touch and so "melba toast".

The Big Three is vested in internal cumbustion, status quo and the labor/engineering/manufacturing model.

I mean Tesla won't give you CarPlay either, but point taken ;)

I'm a GM guy but a whole lot of their decisions make no sense.
