UC help

hey i'm about to start my senior year in highschool and i'm trying to apply for NROTC. well my counsler just told me that their is no way i can enter any UC's because i got a D in some of my core classes (eng,math) freshman year. from what i read No UC acceptance No NROTC. i'm trying to find out what my options are. i know if i go back to my recuirter he'll try to get me to go enlisted then get into a officer program. i was thinking of doing some community college then UC with Nrotc. should i go enlisted?
i find that i'll waste more time in enlisted than in community college.

I wouldnt look at it as wasting time... unless you waste it while doing either.

As for your options, as with everything else. Apply and find out. You never know what might appeal to the right person and you get in. If it doesnt work out, find a JC either at home or by the school you want to go. I know some ROTC programs (dont know about NROTC) allows JC students to participate for years 1-2, but then they have to transfer to an approved 4 year. That route is probably your best bet if you do not get in the first way.

I would take your thickest textbook, and smack your guidance counsleor in the teeth. Admissions to college are hardly that cut and dry. In fact, I remember looking at the application to the UC schools (it was a common application), granted, this was back in 1996, but the UC schools calculate your weighted GPA for your sophomore and junior years only. I ended up not applying because UC schools are really tough for out-of-state kids to get in.

How were your grades the last two years? What about your SAT scores? Also, having some D's may not get you into Cal or UCLA, but as you know, there are a lot of different campuses, and it never hurts to apply.

Well, it does in fact depend on the courses failed. Last year my friend was unable to apply to any UC's because he got a D in his Art History requirement course. There are some hard and fast rules when it comes to such a a massive state system as the UC's.

As to Sna Wannabe's question,

My friend is going on to George Washington University in the fall, so he wasn't a total loss despite not getting into any UC's , and colleges tend to give a little leeway when it comes to freshman year grades. Point is, maybe if you spent a year or even just a semester in a CC passing the courses you need, you might be able to get into a UC. You also might find a college out of state where you can do NROTC. There are a lot of ways to get to college (and commission).

Junior college is an outstanding option, because classes are usually smaller and if you find you don't like a certain course type (calculas for me), and mediocre grades won't transfer over to the big college.

In addition, California has a lot of outstanding universities including the Cal State campuses, which hold just as much weight. Just because you live in Cali doesn't mean you have to use the UC system.

Apply. I damn near faile a couple courses in HS and still got into my top 3 schools.

The worst they can do is tell you no. I can also tell you that spending some time as an enlisted sailor will not be a waste of time, providing you put alot into it and learn as much as you can. Having the enlisted experience as an officer can be very valuable. It also shows comittment to the Navy.

Again, apply and see what they say.

...and if you're going for a ROTC scholarship, it should cover the out-of-state tuition. Plus, I think UC schools have pretty high room and board rates, which is part of your expenses.

Don't forget parking, which is > $1200/year at UCSD.

I repeat...GET THE HELL OUT OF CALI! Although after my parking fines and tow truck fees, it came out to about that for Georgia Tech...not to mention the police record when they had to escort me from the parking office...hmmm....

I should definitely look into that. i'm still a minor for a couple months i could probably get away with it.

Ya that is true but seeing that i'm gonna be in the marines there are probably worst places than a college eastward. EX. 29 plams ( i heard that place was horrible.)

I second this advice. While you may not be able to get into a UC school, there may be other schools out of state that will accept you.

Also, have you talked with an OSO? If you are talking with just a regular enlisted recruiter, there's a chance that they are screwing you over. Go onto the NROTC website(http://www.nrotc.navy.mil) and learn a bit about the application process and where there are schools that have NROTC programs. You will find that there are only three UC schools that have programs, and only two other schools in Cali that have them. And they are all the hardest schools to get into. Again, look eastward, there are plenty of colleges out there looking for students. If you're interested in military schools, I can even make a suggestion or two. Just some advice from a fellow Californian who was in your shoes last year.

P.S. Admissions for the UCs have become that "cut and dry," for the guy who asked. You have to apply in November and admissions are only based on grades and SAT scores, with little relevance given to extra-curricular activities. THey do this because there are so many people who apply each year. I thin last year over 100,000 students applied for a UC school or two or three, you get the picture.
