Ok, "aggressively and unsafely maneuvered near US vessels".

In one of the passes, the SU-24 was below the bridge line of the Cook. This was not a slightly aggressive flyby but instead a simulated attack profile for use with anti-ship missiles - that is why it is extraordinary.

It's what the quoted retired CO said - you don't get to kill someone just because they're being annoying.

There's a matter of judgement and situational awareness - what's more likely, that the Russians just want to show off, or have decided to start a war out of nowhere? - and it's the Skipper's ass if you choose wrong. Thats why the Captain gets all the whistles and bells and the shiny shirt star.

I bet the crew got a hoot out of it. I know I would have. I've never seen an Su-24. The Fencer was one of those Soviet "what can it actually do" aircraft when I was a youngen. We were told it was a F-111 knock-off. Tac-nuke Hi-Lo-Hi/Hi-Lo-Lo transonic profile. She's old, but still a pretty airplane.

Maybe the cold warriors can chime in but events like this used to be a common occurrence back in the day; by the ruskies and us.

We're not at war not at a threat of war with the Russians. Is the ship supposed to launch birds because they dared to come near a ship in international waters?

Maybe they should've had the JORG wear a scary costume and say "booga booga" over guard.

Back in my day it was Bears and Badgers, not quite as fast and maneuverable but would just lumber along. As I recall we'd launch the alert fighters to escort them and keep them in line.

Free air show for the Donald Cook.

No scare mode in the CIWS?

breeeeeeeeeeeepppp "Vasili! The Amerikanski is tracking me!"

I wonder what sort of fun things will be available when DEWs become standard equipment.

*sniff* *sniff* [looks at instruments] "Vasili! My fuel temperature is climbing!"

Operation Bear watch, The Bears made regular flights to Havana down the East Coast and were escorted by The US and Canadians all the way down. Word is that the tail gunners locked the tail guns to full elevation to prevent any "incidents"

There's pictures out there of the Hawaiian good luck sign being flashed and centerfolds being displayed out of canopies.
