all the things i have studied say that if you want to lose the "beer gut" you have to lose the calories. protein..protein..protein..though! do not sacrafice that! as far as piss test, i have looked at about a thousand UA's and even guys who are taking creatine, ephedra, etc, don't test positive. that should not be your concern. the concern you should have is about lowering body fat effectively. regular excersise, including cardio and weights, cutting down the calories, AND accepting that you WILL store fat differently than others is good to remember.

Here's my problem. All of the stuff you guys have been suggesting has been great, but I have already been doing that. Basically, I run around 5-7 miles 6 days a week and then go to the gym 5-6 days a week for a couple of hours. I do the twisting ab machine as well as all of the other ab machines. As for diet, I don't drink anymore (which really sucks by the way.) Try talking to a girl at a bar while you are sipping on either water or diet coke...It's a blast. Anyway, I am on the Atkins diet so no carbs there. The most carbs I eat are the salads I have for dinner. I don't know what else to do. I have been told it's genetics and that's just where it sits. Basically, I have really good muscle tone with the exception of the gut. I look like crap in my uniform because all that shows is the gut. I have been thinking about martial arts to try something different but I am not going to spend 500 bucks if it's not going to work. Any other suggestions? Let me know

Oh, and creatine was just an example. I wasn't thinking about gaining size. I have a 48 inch chest. I ain't going to get bigger than that. Nor do I want to be. Try shopping for suits in my size and you'll see. I guess you guys can tell that I am frustrated. I lost about 70lbs. to join the navy and now that I am within standards and kicking ass physically, I want it to show. Let me know what I can do.

If you dont mind me asking, what is your hieght and wieght? how much are your trying to lose? Are you in standards right now?

some tips for losing the gut from me to anyone.....

Work out in the morning BEFORE you eat (shown to burn more fat due to soemthing with your liver)

Always drink plenty of water at least a gallon a day (it is the main transportation source of cells in the body....efficency)

Make excersize a routine so ingrained in you schedule that if you miss it you will feel guilty (dont know, it works for me)

watch what you eat (most important) and try not to eat a lot in the evenings....the Midnight run to Taco Hell is a Killer, so is beer you drink.

Find your own way of Motivating yourself (whether it be hot Coeds at the gym :), or working out with a buddy with the same interests about losing the gut (this makes things a lot easier)

Find an activity you love to do that burns the Calories (man, I need to start playing soccer again!!!)

Push your limits and be honest with yourself, but most importanly get off you butt and say active

all of the research that i have read says to lift first, 45-60 minutes, then do cardio and i mean cardio. not some wimpy run. hit a stair climber or better yet hit actual stairs.

if you want to kill the gut use a medicine ball, those are great. if you are really daring i would suggest pilates and yoga. yes! they make you use your muscles in a totally different, and natural, combination compared to using a ab machine. you might actually be adding mass to your stomach with that twist machine. watch that your back is not being damaged as well.

as for not drinking...dude!

what are you thinking? red wine or an amstel light is fine! as long as it is not excessive.

if you are worried about genetics, well, it may be true that you are just built that way. but hey what are asthetics anyway. we place too much importance on them!

as for working out in the morning being better, that really is just folklore. not really true. though eating 3 hours befor a work out and no less than that is preferred for glucose uptake and liver functions.

Run and/or reduce the number of calories you're eating every day. You can do situps all day long but it wont show unless you burn off the fat.

dude, I swear by the morning work out! I dont think it has been disproven at all....on the contrarry, it has been proven to burn up fat deposits faster than workouts after you eat.

Yes, studies show that AM workouts prior to eating allows people to start burning fat almost immediately (because glucose and glycogen are depleted, so you don't have to burn through them first) and you burn a higher percentage of calories from fat. Your body is lazy and it will burn carbs before fat any time it can because it's easier.

Also, dude...uh, yeah, uh...dude, I was thinking on the drinking thing that science, not your imagination, or whatever folklore you're reading, has PROVEN that alcohol consumption promotes LIPOGENESIS (fat storage), not LIPOLYSIS (fat burning...which is the goal, dude. =)

Been there, (PNS) Done that.
I dunno, my trainer seems to think that pilates is a waste of time...nothign can replace good old fashon cardio and weight training.

Ok, I wasn't going to poke fun when I saw you were a chick, but this is crossing the line.

Here's the deal. I am currently in standards at 72" and 196lbs. I want to get down to 185. I spend an hour an a half in the gym and run at least 6 miles six days a week. I was thinking of doing martial arts. What do you guys think? It's expensive, but if it gets me where I need to be then cool. let me know. As for morning workouts, that's hard because I work mornings at the recruiting district. If I cut any more calories I will be ethiopian and still have a gut. This is frustrating. let me know what you guys think.

Also, what about stuff like Hydroxycut and Ripped fuel. I am not too keen on taking that stuff but if I have to I will. Let me know.
