Sunglasses

Question: Can anybody explain the Navy's policy on sunglasses to me? I know.."conservative style" and all that, but what does that really mean? The reason I ask is because I have a pair that I've owned since before I joined. They're black frame, blue lens Revos. http://www.peepers.com/products/revo-3040-38700.html

I wore them all the way through OCS (on those rare liberty occasions) and primary and advanced with all types of uniforms. Now I'm at the FRS and a couple of days ago our CMC stopped me to lecture me on my shades. First time I've ever had anyone say anything about them. Even the DIs at OCS never gave me crap about them. I know our CMC prides himself on being a "uniform guru" (as he puts it). Is this just a personal preference or what?

(2) Sunglasses. Conservative sunglasses are permitted, except in military formations. Retainer straps are authorized for FOD prevention and safety only. If retainer straps are required, they shall be plain, black and worn snugly against the back of the head.

Commonly, reflective lenses and or aggressively colored lenses (bright blue, red etc...) are deemed non-conservative but it all depends on who's opinion matters. According to the instruction, I think you are good. Politely thank the CMC and carry on smartly.

The USMC generally considers black frames, non-reflective (and non colored) lenses are conservative in nature. However, in the battalion, I wear silver framed Oakleys with Black Iridium lenses and get little crap. Mostly they say "fvcking pilots"

It is every FACs sacred responsibility to wear really funky sunglasses in the field "they help me see the aircraft"

If you dont have really eccentric sunglasses they may not have faith in your ability to control aircraft.

Just wear them. They don't look outlandish or flashy. Well within the above rule I think. If not, what's going to happen......you might be told to not wear them.

And they also question your abilities as an aviator if you don't call everyone Dude and have your hands in your pockets...

The West Coast FRS was also real big on uniforms due to the FRACs who were going through the syllabus alongside the pilots. But they were still kind of in bootcamp mode, or at least more so than the pilots.

I'm with Bunk. You're an aviator and are supposed to be wearing cool shades. From the looks of them, Sly, yours look pretty conservative to me. I've worn Oakleys my entire career and have rarely had problems. Chuck (for once ;)) offers the best advice if confronted by a surly Chief.

Do y'all stick them into your pen pockets when they're not being worn? I've seen some studs do that here, and I saw someone get bitched at once for doing it. Does anyone sport the "retainer straps" and hang them around their neck?

That's kind of tacky. I stow mine in the left calf pocket.
