It depends on the company. Its usually between 60 and 75 thousand.Thats not bad considering your home every night.Plus you don't have to commute and miss on your kids growing up.Its hazardous but it would be such a blast.

A lot of people grow tired of being on-call. This includes families. I've never heard of it paying that much though... I've seen it MUCH lower. Could be area dependent though.

If your a helo pilot why not fly EMS ..... The airlines are not as great as people think.

The Airlines? GREAT?? But not any more --- No-Way --- True story ... (and I am an Airline Pilot) -- and at the top of the food chain. It ain't what it used to be ... kind of like the medical profession, HUH? When I was a "young pup" and exploring the airlines --- a UAL 727 Captain friend of my Mother's --- (one) who counseled and channeled me --- made $ 30,000/year. Big bucks, then -- living LARGE.

When I got sh!t-canned from Braniff as a S/O -- at the time I was making $35,000/year (!) and was a check-airman ... I got "lucky" (and I'd rather be lucky than "good" anyday --- RIGHT ??) and became the D/O for a part 135 operation in Dallas that specialized in EMS, off-shore oil ("back-in-the-day"), and TV-news. One thing I learned --- and listen carefully all you HELO drivers --- the guys who will be writing your paychecks and writing your schedules --- they DO NOT RESPECT YOU OR YOUR SKILLS. YOU ARE/WILL BE A PIECE OF MEAT !!!

They figure --- if you are "not in" the airlines and you are a civilian pilot --- "you ain't sh!t". NOT MY OPINION --- just that of the jerks who write our paychecks. In my former position, I interviewed many high-time Vietnam Vets and saw how the civilian manager "respected" your HELO skills -- THEY DON'T. It's REALITY --- not what I would call it. I hired 5 guys for offshore/EMS ... three of them died in a crash with a new Bolkow ... and I was the only one there that gave a sh!t amongst the "management" types.

P.S. I know whereof I speak --- I worked with and against the "Hunt Bros." when J.R. Ewing and "Dallas" were big-time ... LIFE WAS GOOD, THEN ..... :cowboy_12

BRANIFF RULES ... ?? Well ... it used to. I am blamed in some circles for the demise of BI (Big Idiot) ... I participated in a major-league TV commercial for them --- even joined the Screen Actors Guild (had to) and got paid nearly $5000 -- in 1982 dollars, a big-shot, No ? Yet they still went out of business. Some said it was because I had a speaking part -- we shall never know.

Braniff was a GREAT place to work. We stuck together; looked out for one another. They had the best safety record of any major airline at the time and .... oooooohhh! Their flight attendants were argueably second only to PSA's ... and since I spent four (4!!) days @ PSA --- therefore I know the truth.

I don't know what you mean by being on call. When there on duty there either at an airport or hospital. No calls when your at home or not schedules. Most companies top out a around 60K but it depends on the company and area.Right now Air Methods is having a hard time.I was talking to there recruiter and he said most think airlines are so much better so they transition. To me 60K plus is good money. Why do think EMS stands for Easy Money Sleeping.

60K isn't good money. It might be adequate money if you live in Misissippi, but it's basically squat if you live anywhere worth living.

Boeing 747SP ... the only 747 that you can fly -- FULL -- from Dallas to Seoul and still lose money on ... the Iranians and ChiComs ended up with most of them after PanAm died. Very deserving ... :)

I'm not leaning towards getting out because the money is better, or the lifestyle, or bitterness towards my community. It is because I want to do something different. I know exactly how the next 12 years are going to fall and it does not inspire me at all. The Navy has been a great job but it does not hold the promise that I want or expect. There are some great opportunities to serve your country as a civilian that most do not persue or know about. Keep your options open.

Ok I realize this is more Navy oriented poll but here is a thought. I dont believe anyone who talks about getting out anymore. I cant tell you how many guys go on and on about getting out and how they are sick of the BS etc etc etc only to see them execute orders in a month or two. It happens but the more people talk about it the less I am inclined to think they will. The guy who quietly does his job and sets himself up for the outside is more likely to get out and get nice recomendations to that end.
My two cents.

Haven't replied to the poll... Got 14 years in, and I "guess" I am going for 20 :D... Seriously though, the recent wardroom reduction plan, HONA and sh!tty DH screening forecasts for YGs 95-00 has got the shiznet scared out of me, and has single handedly caused me to give up any plans on continuing foward in the VP community. Unless the floodgates miraculously open, needs of the Navy are going to dictate to my peer group that a vast majority of us aren't going to be considered for DH, so, thanks for playing, and go fill this overseas TSC OIC position... umm, no thanks... Fortunately, I can retire prior to that, but I always saw myself going to 30, and having a good time doing it. FTS may be an option as Zab mentioned, for me to continue, but every tom dick and harry is going to be applying to that one. I don't look forward to the last day I put on the uniform, let alone the flightsuit...
