Which line of the Middle East census do they mark "terrorist", is it 14b or 14e? I think we all know how the numbers game can be played by those in the media.

:) Good one. I agree.

I think terrorists are created from a magical mixture of poverty, oppression, predisposition, and religon. I don't think seeing/knowing someone who is planning to kill others get killed first makes more terrorists.

There is a fundamental difference my friend. Our military is fighting them over there; and burying an a$$ton of them. Yes, we are suffering losses too. But by use of this logic, pulling out would mean they would come to America to do blow people up. In this scenario, innocent men, women, and most importantly; children, lose their lives. Lets leave the fight overseas.

I think I've made my own position clear that we should remain in Iraq until the job is done, but the argument that fighting them there keeps them away from the US doesn't make sense to me. It's important to separate the different groups from each other because their motives are very different. It's not as though our presence in Iraq is preventing Al Qaeda members from getting on a plane and coming to the US. If they want to do an operation here, they will, regardless of what is going on in Iraq. The vast majority of the fighting there is not from Al Qaeda types. The insurgency and most of the associated violence comes from two places - sectarian strife and old regime members resisting the new government. These two groups weren't interested in killing Americans before the war, and to imply that they would be attacking our homeland if we weren't there is a simplistic and ignorant analysis of the issue. The Al Qaeda presence in Iraq is there because it's easy and convenient for them, but it would be foolish to conclude that Iraq is somehow diverting a significant portion of their resources away from attacking the US directly. The statement that Iraq is the central front in the GWOT is a handy piece of rhetoric, but that doesn't make it true.

I couldn't agree more ... seriously ... when you have cancerous "cells" buried all around the world --- why would one particular oil-rich Middle Eastern country --- Iraq in this case --- become the nexus for the Islamic sui caedere of this world ???

There's too many soft targets to be had. Last time I checked ... Al Qaeda didn't like to stand and fight against the best equipped and trained military in the world ... it's a losing proposition for them, long term. The seem to prefer stealth and car bombs, instead.

I'm more concerned about going to Bangkok or Manila than Basrah, but then that's where my world lives and breathes. When one of the "millennium bombers" is captured in sleepy little Port Angeles, WA ... well, you know they're here "amongst us" ... heck, I don't even like to go to the mall these days ... but Al Qaeda is only one of the reasons. :)

Apples and oranges......nahh, more like apples and walnuts :confused: . If you took a look the total number of attacks against US forces you would be at a loss to explain why there are not more casualties, the numbe rof attacks in Iraq dwarfs the casualties. The only reason the KIA and WIA numbers are much greater is because of the extraordinary force protection efforts of the US forces over there as well as the first rate, and extremely rapid, medical care.

To say that Iraq ia less violent than DC is sheer stupidity :rolleyes: , the last time I checked there were no IED's along Pennsylvania Ave......

No, but the average Iraqui citizen is allowed to own firearms for their protection, unlike people in DC...
