Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

Apparently the fact the new 'battleship' would not be delivered by 2028 may have been a factor in SECNAV's relief, possibly not helped by the Secretary suggesting utilizing foreign shipyards to meet the timeline.
"Earlier this month, Mr. Hegseth and Mr. Feinberg told Mr. Trump that the Navy secretary was not a team player and needed to go, military officials said. Mr. Trump called Mr. Phelan to talk about his poor relationship with other leaders in the Pentagon."

Multiple sources are reporting that the resignation / firing was over a personality conflict between SECDEF and SECNAV. Hegseth resented that Phelan had a direct line / relationship with the President.

Apparently Hung Cao is the new SecNav.
Acting... would probably be confirmed due to his military background. He's kind of a kook, and being a marginally successful Navy O6 hardly qualifies him for the job, but we know qualifications aren't important to this admin. Maybe there's still hope for Hendrix after all. :D

FIFY, sadly.
Fair enough, but I'm tired of the assembly line of 4-star SECDEF / SECNAVs with Congressional waivers. Let alone Brett denigrating the ~1% of AD Navy servicemembers who make O6.

While I'm not a fan of Hegseth, specifically, I am a fan of Trump's mentality that it's time to insert leadership that isn't corrupted by decades of inner-beltway disease and programmed how to think by JPME. He made that mistake with Mattis, who failed spectacularly as SECDEF.

“Failed spectacularly?” How so? You can’t possibly think that Hegseth is doing a better job.

Trump’s first cabinet wasn’t great, but it at least had some adults in the room.

The only cabinet member who isn’t a complete imbecile is Rubio. The rest are a menagerie of morons and kooks.

There have been more SECDEFs than just Mattis and Hegseth. This isn't a 2-person choice.

Hegseth is a liability to Trump that he can't fire because of how much political capital he used to get him approved. That's why Hegseth's in the dog house modifying flu vaccine policies and acting like a PT stud while the 'adults' (if you can call the rest of the cabinet that) make foreign policy decisions without him. The group of 'adults' included former SECNAV Phelan.

In Trump's mind, he'd rather have an incompetent lap dog than the obligatory stubborn 60-something year old who has spent 40 years in DC who will try to talk him out of his policy objectives, which is who he'd have to appoint to replace Hegseth.

Right idea trying to bring in a fresh perspective, but really poor execution.

What? Please explain
Mattis never left active duty in mentality or spirit. Before he resigned over differences of opinion with Trump on deploying ground troops to Syria (with Mattis being strongly on the side of committing forces), he had instituted such policy initiatives as 'thou shalt have 80% readiness, no exceptions' (which magically made stoplight charts green) and randomized carrier deployments.

We need our Secretary of Defense to act like a civilian leader and sometimes accept bad news. It helps if they understand that ships and planes need maintenance cycles.

There was wisdom in requiring someone to be removed from military service for at least 10 years to hold the position.
