PAO does not require sitting in an office all day. In fact, it is normally concurrent to flying daily/briefing/debriefing, writing the flight schedule, and doing all the other odds and ends jobs of a new JO. It is not a primary billet for the vast majority of us.

.......one of the FNGs who just gets stuck with it and if they are good enough usually resort to writing mildly outlandish stories for the base paper (too outlandish and the XO gets a call from the base CO), making up quotes for your fellow JOs about the latest Fallon det/Red Flag/Cope Awesome exercise. Not that kind of thing ever happened to me......"Wait, I said what about working with the JASDF?!"
 
That's a pretty funny take :) I wonder how the job differs being a "FNG with PAO duties" versus being a commissioned PAO. My interpretation of the latter was that it could be a shoreside job (writing, making other people write, escorting media around, etc.). I basically just envisioned it being media relations for the military, which can't be much different than media relations for any other business, in the fundamentals at least.

As for being assigned PAO duties on the side while underway, I don't think I had an image in mind for that.

Haha! OUTSTANDING. Glad to see you have a decent sense of humor. It took me a year and a half to get my acceptance letter back. Just enjoy your life as a civilian while you can- it will end far too quickly. And a kind word to the wise: Don't go bragging about what your degree was in or what you would LIKE to do- just know that as an FNG [no matter your community] you will do what you're told, smile even if you don't like it, and move along smartly. If someone ASKS what you went to college for, tell them and then turn the question around to them. Why? Because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. This is a volunteer organization. No one had a gun to their head when they VOLUNTARILY accepted their commissioning, and no one ever has a gun to their head when they get promoted and repeat the commissioning oath. Everyone has a lot to do [and always will], and no one officer's duties are more important than the next. Don't be a martyr. We had a guy like that at my last command and I just wanted to slap the shit out of him and say "Dude, we're ALL here working late. Why are you so special that you get to whine about it?" Anyway, good luck. with your application process. The Navy is a hell of a ride :)
