Old Uniforms.....1930s - 1940s

Yeah, I think that’s right. In older pictures, I remember seeing ‘rate’ on the right arm, and ‘hash marks’ on the left arm.
And before Flugelman says anything, my rate badge was on my left arm.

Edit:RIGHT ARM RATES--established in 1841 and disestablished 2 April 1949, originally signified men of the Seaman branch. During WWII these rates included Boatswains Mate, Turret Captain, Signalman, Gunners Mate, Fire Controlman, Quartermaster, Mineman, and Torpedomans Mate. Other ratings wore rates on the left sleeve
Our buddy here, Ernest, was a Gunners Mate.

I can remember some "Right Arm Rate" discussions way back when... I was was watching a WWII movie the other day and the wife caught a rating badge on the "wrong" arm and commented on it. I had to go look up the rates that wore those.

Yes, being a right arm rate adds a little to the legacy of a rate. Maybe this is why I think tradition is a good thing, and am also hoping that the latest fight for an old uniform is won.

No, that would have been the dumbass ASTAC that always tac sig'd you guys. We may have it sectored, but if they have you tac sig'd it don't matter.
I love the "old" uni's ....
Sounds like the "hard-core" blackshoe ratings wore their rate on the right arm ... so how about Machinist's Mates???
I realize this was "just" Hollywood -- but it was pretty damn accurate w/regard to uniforms of the period ... ??? Was it "right" (or left
) ... or was it just Hollywood ??? 
I always wondered about that. Sectored my ass! I had a floppy disk in my pocket during DLQ's to an AB, when I got back to the boat it was slicked.
I have three boys so it didn't fry my nuts, maybe my brain....
