Not to get too far off track here, but the Harrier RAG is about to send several of their recently designated 7509's to the TRACOMs to lend assistance too. It's obvious someone's hurting for pilots and fortunately, for once, it's not us. It's lack of quals that's killing us....but we'll save that for another thread.

There were a pair of Harrier guys at VT-86 when I went through who had only been in VMA's for a year before they were sent back to VT's in order to get some flight time.

probably a rumor but the last I heard was the OPNAV 3710 waivers are on a 4-stars desk waiting to be signed.

what's a P-3 NFO going to teach? not TACF or ACm ... forms? when was the last time a P-3 NFO flew form? Instruments maybe but only 3 of them have the IP in the trunk.

Question for the masses because I don't know... are NFO's instrument qualed?

S/F

Latest I have heard from bubbas in K-rock, they have two P-3 NFO's currently in ground training and sims.

Of note, can't find their syllabus on the CNATRA website so no idea what it looks like

Meridian ATC already seems to hand out flight violation on a regular basis, and there have been at least two or three times when an instructor has saved me from earning him one on an early BI flight. Unless they are working miracles in the FITU I am very skeptical of an NFO critiquing landings and other aspects of fam flying that are learned after many hours of being behind the controls of a jet.

That's great kid. Before offering your skepticism of fleet Instructors (Pilots or FO's), consider offering input when you're beyond the great realm of experience (read: many hours) that is TRACOM.

3 of our Instructor FO's/WSO's are finishing their T-6 contacts this week.
Two are tacair (F-18 and 15), one is P-3's.

Think they'll have some interesting input in the FITU and give Instructor Nav's something to fly in (albeit much less frequently) when we go to Multi-Crew Sims...

I'll continue to rack my brain ... but for now; there is not one -- NOT ONE area of pilot flight training that an NFO would have been equal/greater than the pilot instructor.

Not ... even ... one.

That's just the way it is; this is all being contemplated for one and only one reason:

To attempt to save ..... $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

We fought this SAME battle in the airlines -- "flight specialist" instructors substituted in the sims instead of using more "expensive" line pilots -- again, for one reason and one reason only - $$$$$$$

But how much will we save at the end of the day when we put up 'NFO' trained Naval Aviators ... ???

NFO's are great and necessary in Naval Aviation. But this proposal is bullshit and wrong-headed from the get-go ...any senior Officer who promotes it deserves your scorn. Silently ...

I should add that these FO's are envisioned to supplement the FITU staff and facilitate the training of Fleet aviators in the IUT syllabus.

I apologize for the tone of my previous post...blame it on the Guinness...:)

Lord, I loved when the third flight of the day was an IUT trunk... I could relax and not contemplate my existance each second for an hour...

Guess the (i)FO's get that one now... FCF's gone to contract... cross countries to military or prescribed fields only??? How's an IP supposed to relax or have fun on his/her way to sciatica and neck problems??? Shit, there goes morale and the mighty X count again! Ahhhhhh the good ol days..

are NFO's instrument qualed?
Yes and no... So Sort of.. In the Hoov, they did groundschool and an instrument check.. But it was more a drill in paperwork because it was technically not needed... As per the S-3 NATOPS, the only requirement was a Naval Aviator and a passenger to operate the aircraft. That was the most submitted NATOPS change whenever a double anchor took over in the front office!

That is because too many morons find ways to screw up the good deals.. After 911, we weren't allowed to go to civilian fields for the longest time but when the Xs start falling behind things change.. Also the Commo was so afraid that we were gonna be a bunch of cowboys when the T-2 Studs were gone that he nixed a ton of good deals.. We ran out of jets before hours but not because we didn't have qualed IPs and RESDET dudes but because leadership was in the constant and more evident, CYA Mode!!! Thank god I got out of Meridian and the Navy on the front side of the REALLY bad leadership, or lack there of!

FY PTR runs it all... quality out the door?? whatever... (from 02-06)
I think freeing up another Pilot IP to ride with a stud on his third hop will have marginal benies for X count, and thus PTR... all the morale stuff you mentioned is what really gets folks flying, producing and maximizes quality.

It was to get a work around of single-piloted wx mins.....the S-3 was considered multi-piloted for these purposes only.
