The Yankee looks like it will be pretty badass, I am happy the Huey is getting some luvin, esp. in the engine department, it needs it. Used to watch them race through the valleys to try and get enough airspeed to clear the hills outside MCAS Camp Pen.

Our systems are similar to the -60's. Triple hydraulic, dual AFCS (Automated Flight Control System), and dual flight control systems.
Auto a -53? Seriously, we have THREE engines. But there has been a documented case of a -53 doing a full auto (fuel system malfunction), and yes the aircrew survived.
Also, sure you can fly to the objective area at 250 kts, and outrun everything. But coming into the zone you are still coming in like a big slow helo, and are just as vulnerable as the rest of us.

I shall stand corrected on the autorotational capabilities of the 53. I just accepted as gospel the conventional wisdom passed down to me.

However, though a V-22 becomes a slow helo just over the trees, it is much harder to hit coming in, decelerating from 220 to 0 inside a 3 mile distance. Conversely, accelerating like a bat out of hell on the way out helps a lot, too.

Marine MV-22 engaged in ASW exercise...dropping sonobuoys. The poor crewman breaking out buoys using a combat knife to to release from packaging.

As someone who has broken out my fair share of buoys to free fall, I can tell you that that it’s definitely a degraded mode of operations, and a huge PITA. “Wait… was that channel 17 or 18? (shrugs in AO3)

I don’t know why they were holding on to those empty SLCs. Fun fact, fish love to lay their eggs in those, so it’s a best practice to throw them overboard.

Wonder if the dudes with laptops were monitoring the buoys in some way.

Reminds me of the time one of the O4s on my crew asked me to break open a bunch of ALE-39 chaff rounds and dump them into an SLC made to launch SUS, because TACTICS! 😂 I told him that I was pretty sure NAVAIR would frown upon that, but we did it anyway. It was the Cold War. Fuck it. 😂

I do remember the chaff/flare/.50 cal X's starting around June/July when higher hq dudes started worrying about getting rid of the shit prior to the end of the FY (can't remember the acronym for the budget item)...It was a waste and fucking stupid.
