I personally know several IBEW members who, with overtime, are making over $250K, and have been for several years.
And the average work efficiency for all trades combined in Manhattan is around 35%.
Part of why the the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island retrofit project and the New World Trade Center were each more than $1B in overruns.

Literally that's the top 0.1% of tradesman.

The most chill HTCS I ever met worked building skyscrapers in NYC before he joined the Navy at ~30. His perspective was always that the Navy never put him at risk of falling 100 stories to his death and he makes more money in a safer environment, an accident he'd witnessed a half dozen times.

I'm very familiar with the NY environment having been from there and having family there. My 32 year old cousin finally can only work 2 jobs to afford his rent.

I personally worked for several people connected to the family and had paid there way for the glorious privilege of being a park supervisor because they only needed to be at work 2 hours a day inbetween doing who knows what.

Hence my heavy emphasis on nepotism and corruption.

YMMV.

My point is let's not turn into boomers and say dumb things like "if only these lazy zoomers would show up to a job site with a hammer and some work ethic, they'd be making bank in the trades." That's not how it works.

Then there's the working conditions, which can, if you are a right-winger, open your eyes much more to the importance of regulations and even unions for worker protection.

Growing up, being Republican would get a VERY visceral reaction from anyone working in trades because the Democrats were very pro-union.

Fast forward to 2022 and the Democrat POTUS takes a 1 ton dump on railroad unions.

That and his amnesty policies cost them reelection.

Skip the hard work. Buy a trades small business (eg plumber), using seller financing. Every year, thousands of small business owners either sell their business or close it without getting any money for it. It actually costs them more money to close it than to sell it.

I mean, if you've ever needed home repairs done then you've dealt with dozens of mildly retarded business owners, many of whom won't even write a contract (because they're illiterate).

Yup, and that is why these businesses can be vastly elevated with some simple enhancements like a website, marketing, streamlined and digitized biz ops, etc.

You're saying that as a college graduate and not someone who got Cs in high school.

I've also served with COBs (CMC equivalent) who can't read... plural. It was a significant barrier to leadership.

How did they become COB if can't read?
Perhaps part of the problem, promotion without basic requisites?
Is that a serious question from a veteran?

And from a Marine?

You're telling me all your E6 and above could read beyond elementary school sentences and didn't 'fake it till they make it' by uptasking their officers?

It's always interesting to get a peek into your bizarre little world. Everything in the quote above is the opposite of my experience.

Were there struggle-bus E-6s? Sure, but all the more cancelling out them being able to "uptasking their officers." We did have an E-9/CMC try to do that, and it was crushed very quickly.

That's because Marine company grade officers have balls and Navy junior officers (meaning O4 and below) don't.

We can have honest conversations.

I don’t know about this. I was a grunt and none of the rocks I worked with were functionally illiterate - all could easily read and comprehend at the FM/TM level. Would I want them running a nuclear reactor, no, but they weren’t idiots.
