Jonny Kim solos the T-6

He's going to be an IP in K-Vegas? How does that work?
How did David Robinson commission as a CEC officer out of USNA and serve just two years active at Kings Bay, balance SELRES supporting Recruiting Command? Shit works when the right people find motivation.

supposedly he's going through the FITU, going to be a full-time instructor for about 3 months, then a weekend warrior type instructor to help the wing out and keep his hours up. He's flown in the T-38 from the back seat several times, I guess there aren't many options for him to keep flying at nasa with his limited aviation experience

Seems like he'd be a shoe in for Artemis 3 if he stays current as a jet IP.

That said, he did grow after he got to the Academy above line officer height restrictions.

I remember the case. His rate of growth at the academy was extraordinary. He wanted to be a submarine officer and he was too tall for subs and aviation. My recollection is he could have been a SWO, but being an ordinary SWO and serving out a full four year academy payback was not conducive to an NBA career. As an officer program recruiter at the time , I can say that his work for recruiting command was ernest and useful. He did more for the Navy in the NBA as a reserve officer , then he would have as a JO on a DDG in Norfolk.

Not to be a dick, but what difference does being a jet guy mean here? The Artemis pilot doesn’t actually fly the thing. I certainly see the the draw for TPS types but the jet driver angle seems a bit old fashioned to me.

Have there ever been RW spacecraft pilots at NASA? I think jet guy is the de facto standard for that gig. Not to be a dick, but jet guys think, decide and act at high speed because it's the environment they're used to operating in with high performance aircraft.

Suni Williams was the designated vehicle pilot on the Boeing Starliner mission to ISS.

To answer your first question the only one I know is Jasmin Moghbeli (USMC helicopters) and that’s only a half answer because she has been a mission commander which I assume isn’t the same as a pilot. I watched the launch today and watching the speeds I have to say that flying at Mach 3 seems pretty slow!

Fred Gregory flew STS-51B as a former USAF helicopter pilot. He was also later a NASA administrator. So yeah, helo guys have flown spaceships before.

Including the Canadian, aren't there 3 Hornet/Super Hornet pilots onboard? They could do a mini NATOPS conference if they get bored!
Point of order: RCAF doesn’t fly the Super Hornet.

Yeah. I don't know anything from the inside, but it seems that if you want to be an astronaut who comes from the military you're a jet pilot. I'm sure there's the exception that proves the rule.

Maybe it's a left over from the Mercury Seven era where everyone was a test pilot and they were all flying jets. Maybe it's because jet pilots exist in an environment where they think in 8+ miles per minute, see the world well beyond what everyone else does, and has the culture to brief and debrief everything is excruciating detail. "You were 3 seconds behind timeline and you looked left instead of looking right- that's why you're dead" doesn't really work in the big wing community yet is expected in the fighter community.

Maybe you'd like to argue that Jet grades shouldn't exist anymore in flight school? I don't know. There has to be a cut somewhere, right? People far smarter than me have figured it out. Helo guys don't become NASA pilots. Jet guys do. I didn't write the rules.
