I dont know too much about California gun laws because im still underage and haven't done much research. I do know that carrying a weapon in a visible manner is 'brandishing' and is against the law, and im sure out here in cali you would prolly get charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer or something ridiculous. Im not too sure about getting a CCW licence, but i do know purchasing handguns is severely restricted. Waiting periods, backround checks, etc. Let me know how it goes.
 
Getting a CCW in CA is up to whoever the sheriff is in your county. Some rural counties take a "shall-issue" policy, or close to it. Urban counties are generally unfriendly, but some are better than others.

Joboy: from the way you're talking, you should get some basic gun safety education before buying anything. Then go to a range that rents firearms and try different ones out.
 
Read "Jeff Cooper's Commentaries." These will give you insight and wisdom beyond the mechanics of pistol shooting. They will assist you in developing the proper mind-set for firearm ownership.

Same in all states, although in many states the waiting period is simply for the background check. In my state it is an instant check so the "waiting period" is only as long as a fax or phone call.

I disagree. Actually, the AZ CCW course is a very good intro to hand guns course. A good place to start. Only deal is you need the gun to shoot for the qual. So if you are looking for a first gun I'd suggest shooting some to decide what weapon/caliber you like best and then take the CCW. Otherwise, borrow a gun for the course then finish off your research and buy your gun at your leisure. You do not have to qual with a gun you own or the caliber you will carry. Now whether a brand new gun owner should be carrying concealed is another matter. Common sense prevails and additional training or practice is advisable. Again, the AZ CCW course makes all this very clear and goes a long way in convincing people that the responsibility and liability of CCW carry is something to not take lightly. I am convinced that some folks walk out of the class with permit in hand and never carry because the class educated them out of wanting to take on the responsibility.

Also since my family is all in CA, I was wondering what the deal is with carrying a gun in CA. I heard that a military ID allows you an exception for a CCW in CA and I remember reading something to that effect in the laws, but does anyone know for sure?

Take several firearms courses, learn/know the gun laws cold where you are, be safe and practice a lot. If you step over the line, YOU will be arrested.

Hearing something from someone once somewhere will get you arrested.

Go to a range that rents handguns. Try several. Explain what you are looking for to the guy/gal that works there. Let people help you.

And lastly, listen and learn...do not transmit.

Unlike many here, I do not own any guns so I normally stay out of these discussions. But.....

Edit: My input was recieved by the appropriate party and another who I respect asked me to tone it down....so it's gone....

Open carrying in California is only permitted in counties with no more than 200,000 residents, and outside of any city lines. So if you want to go into the boonies of the 9 smallest (out of 40) counties in California than it would'nt be true, your right.
I was being sacrastic about impersonating a peace officer.
California has a 10 day waiting period for the purchase of a handgun, and you can only buy one handgun every 30 days. The waiting period is used both for the background check, and as a 'cool off' period to help prevent hate crimes.

Gee, funny that the federal check takes less than 5 minutes. CA is a model of socialist efficiency...

On this, it is to make it as difficult as possible to get a gun.

To paraphrase A4s, it is not about GUNS, it is about CONTROL
