Gee, funny that the federal check takes less than 5 minutes. CA is a model of socialist efficiency...

On this, it is to make it as difficult as possible to get a gun.

To paraphrase A4s, it is not about GUNS, it is about CONTROL

I always kind of thought that the 10 day waiting period was meant partly as a "cooling off" period to make sure that you werent buying a gun in the heat of th moment to go off someone. :icon_wink

@ Wink,
I'll admit that I dont know TOO much about CCW because I never considered getting one. But does an AZ CCW class transfer to California? I only know one guy who has a CCW and he has it up in Hanford (thats up next to Lemoore in case your not famliar) and he is constantly having to requal classes.

Alright, let's not turn this into a circus. Thread pruned, let's get back on track.

But Brett, how can it be a true AirWarriors thread if it does not derail, kill 5 innocent orphans and make a chemical response team come in?

Go to a range that rents handguns. Try several. Explain what you are looking for to the guy/gal that works there. Let people help you.

And lastly, listen and learn...do not transmit.

Good luck.

Joboy,
Next time you come on down the hill, stop by Scottsdale Gun Club. They rent a very wide variety of guns.

JoBoy...

I will give some honest, good, not busting your balls (though I dearly want to) advice:

RESEARCH Gun Laws, Gun Safety, The Four Rules, etc...
GET Training, both safety and marksmanship.
REMEMBER. Safety is #1. And 2, 3, 4 as well. See the four rules.

www.thehighroad.org is a good place to look.

1. Browse, look for info.
2. Ask some basic questions if you do not find a good answer or are unsure.
3. BE RESPECTFUL.
4. VERIFY any legal info given by crosschecking it with you state's AG.

Thanks all for the (mostly) sound advice.

@Hal: I appreciate your point of view but I beg to differ. I'm not going out tomorrow to buy a gun. I am slowly becoming fully aware of the implications of owning and possibly having to use a gun. While you may think I'm just a kid trying to play adult, you really have no idea. I'm sure you have a crystal clear portrayal of my maturity, responsibility and ability from your vantage point behind your screen. You know nothing about me, so don't pretend you do sir. I know I will make it through OCS because I want to make it and I want it for the right reasons. I have proven myself worthy of the chance to become a Naval Aviator, and if you see otherwise than you are simply decrying the Navy of which you seem to be a proud member. I don't see what this has to do at all with this thread but since you brought it up, I think I'd at least put my opinions on the matter out there. This is not really appropriate for an open thread. If you have issues with me, I'd appreciate it if you'd PM instead.

Thanks again all,

Cheers

Like we are all respectful here on AW, right?

Seriously, not bad advice, but there is no reason to go to a web forum and then crosscheck the info you are given. Why notn just take a CCW class taught by instructors certified by the State Department of Public Safety that teach from a syllabus approved by the DPS? It is just like the admonition we always give wannabes here to go straight to the source and ask a recruiter.

Not entirely true. You have a large posting habit compared to most here and that gives us a pretty good idea itself. We can then delve into the wisdom and relevance of those posts and glean some further insight into who really, this joboy 2.0 really is. Based on that, I think it is safe to say we have rough portrayal of your maturity and responsibility; at the very least a great deal more than board that selected you. You have said some less than wise things and were we in person, one could assume, for your sake, that you just spoke without thinking or just felt like you had to say something. As it is, you have the chance to think, re-think and then see how your thoughts play out on the screen before your post-foolishness is less forgivable given this consideration.

I have proven myself worthy of the chance to become a Naval Aviator, and if you see otherwise than you are simply decrying the Navy of which you seem to be a proud member.

No, you have not proven yourself worthy of the chance to become a Naval Aviator, you have been given the chance to become worthy to become an Officer. The whole decrying the Navy sentence makes no sense to me since we all know that Navy recruiting is not perfect except for Wink and those of us who have been in the longest are more intimately aware of the flaws of our beloved service and have earned the right to talk about them, especially in the spirit of making them better. (My apologies to fellow English Majors for that run-on sentence).

I think I'd at least put my opinions on the matter out there.

Okay, this is the main problem. You just thought you'd throw out your opinions. And for what reason? I think we have covered this before when Joboy666 was around. Just talking to talk is a big problem for you and will become a huge problem later on for you.

I know you feel beat down a little, but most of us are here to help (picture me with an orange t-shirt-VP inside joke) and let you know what training and a squadron will be like. You still have time to work on this if you choose to heed some very well intentioned advice. I suppose I could've pm'd you this stuff but I am hoping that some others, not only you, will get something out of it. For those that have ears, becoming a Naval Flight Officer or Aviator if you can't get FO:) is about much more than just getting a spot and then passing the schools and we are trying to get that across.

Having said all that, get a used medium framed .357 revolver and practice with economical .38 special rounds as much as you can. Get good at pistol shooting and then step to a higher dollar auto-loader when you really know what you are looking for.

www.packing.org

It's a great site, it shows what states honor or have reciprocity with other states. It's also a great collection of states' gun laws and they keep it pretty regularly updated.

@ Joboy, I'd recommend against getting a .45, especially against getting a .357 Sig. While both are great rounds for carrying, both are strong loads (the .357 Sig is especially hot) and can be a good bit too strong for beginners (in my teaching/training experience).

RockyMtnNfo's advice of getting a .357 revolver and shooting .38 special rounds through it is a great idea. The .357 is a heavy gun that is really easy to control when shooting .38, so you'll be able to get some good fundamentals practice in. Then, down the road once you've gotten some experience you can drop some dough on a nice semi-auto.

Well I thank you for your advice. I don't deny that I've said less than wise things on here before but I don't see that I've done anything like that in this thread and I see the post made by HAL as completely unwarranted. I think my posting has been pretty good of late, and recent rep seems to corroborate that. Regardless, I'm sure that every thread I start will be a travesty waiting to happen even long after (the big IF) I get my wings. Everyone on here can tell me I'll fail but it will only be more motivation for me to suck it up and push harder during OCS/API/Primary/Advanced.

And with that, I am off for the three day weekend! :D

I was, in fact, paying homage to one of CNRC's finest in all sincerity. I usually lay the sarcasm on pretty thick. We're not gonna hug or anything are we?

That's definitely good advice. I joined the SGC about 6 months ago since I was fairly new to handguns and it's been a great experience in terms of being able to try out a range of different pistols.
