Crazy Blood Pressure

My blood pressure is starting to make me nervous. I'm not overweight at all but I haven't exercised regularly in over a year. I was also into a bad habit of hamburgers and a pepsi about everyday. Anyhow I've turned over a new leaf and for the past week and half I've been running 2 miles a day to try to get into shape but my blood pressure is the highest its ever been. A few months ago I tested it and it was 117/72 today I went to Walmart and checked it on the machine and it was 155/78! Freaking out I shot over to CVS and checked it on their machine to get a reading of 146/81. Why is it so high and how do I get it down to an acceptable range within the next 4 months? Thanks!

Come on man, those things are like arcade games. Just talk to a nurse or someone who knows how to take it the old fashioned way to get your real number and work from there.

First off, don't freak out...that's not going to help anything. Search the term "blood pressure" and you'll find lots of info.

I've been seeing docs on and off for a while now about my BP. None of them have been able to come up with a good reason why mine is high, so at my last appointment they had me do a 24 hour BP test. I just did it this week and it looks like all of my readings were very good. FWIW, when I check mine at the local stores my pressure seems to be on the high side. I went to the drug store and picked up a home monitor and they seemed to be better...you may want to get one as well. If you continue to see high numbers then you should mention it to your Doc and ask to do one of the 24-hr tests. And of course, cut out the fast food. Coke, fries, and burgers are loaded with sodium.

Here's a thread I had going about BP a while back.

Haha Ok Will do. As far as for seeing the doc, I'm on that independent kid in college insurance plan with $40 in his pocket.. so that has to wait until I get my school money at the end of the month :D

Since they were both relatively close, I would definitely say you have high blood pressure. I have checked my pressure for the hell of it at those in-store places and it is right inline with what I get at the flight doc. Just change to a healthy diet and workout.

Dunno why it was so high. Most likely a temporary rise...hormones, stress of some kind, etc. Like others said, get your hiney back on a regular exercise program, cut down on the high fat meat, cut down on the sodas and processed sugars, drink lots of water and you should be ok.

Ummm, that will be my standard $75 out of office consult, please. You can fax me a check.

I like how Feddoc has been the Doctor Drew of this forum.

Mine is always 5-10 points higher on those machines compared to when a person who knows what they're doing does it.

Well take it slow, don't try to do too much at first and hurt yourself (or die).
