We have got to resurrect this thread when the dust settles to call out those posters with extreme positions if/when their chicken little predictions fall flat.

I haven't been watching/reading much news, because I'm lucky enough to have a brother-in-law who's an Army LtCol, M.S., M.D. infectious disease researcher and clinical physician. He says the normal, CDC-provided precautions are sufficient (for those of us not in a high-risk category/family), and that all the media coverage is generally overblown.

I wanna see a breakdown after the fact. Did we plunge our country into a recession thereby making a bunch of people much worse off to protect a group that was the statistically most likely to die in the next 5-10 years anyway? Interesting essay my ethics professor would probably have made me write.

With all due respect, your FAA doctor was shooting sunshine up your ass.

The big difference and why this isn't an overreaction is there is a vaccine for flu but there is nothing for covid-19. There is nothing to stop the spread and the mortality rate is 10 times that of the flu. What we see in flu season is with herd immunity working for us. The vast majority of people therefore don't get the flu. There are other big differences in incubation times and an extremely large range of symptoms from asymptomatic to severe.

Hopefully all of this mitigation works and the virus peaks next month and you can requote people like me and say "see, told you this was a media job"
You got an medical degree not in your profile? You are a Navy pilot dude. A very young person. Where did you learn about public health? I have heard from two docs that say what HALs did. No they aren't infectious disease specialists, but sometimes the experts get lost down in the weeds. They have blinders on to the real world. Clinicians deal in the real world. Not a lab. Not in front of a computer. Their insight is valuable.

Who cares what anyone’s personal doctor, cousin doctor or anyone else thinks? It’s all anecdotal. I have several friends from college, all MDs, including one who is a pulmonary doctor, and they take the opposite view of your doctor @HAL Pilot and brother in law @IKE and friends @wink. They think this thing is deadly serious. You could ask 50 different doctors the same question and get 50 different opinions.

We already have several countries’ examples that got hit before we did. The ones that isolated quickly have done well, the ones that did not....haven’t.

We can argue about it as much as we want. I’m just going to chill on my couch and read to the max extent practicable until this blows over...When the Navy isn’t making me muster to discuss the dangers of COVID.

So there is no limit for you? As long as you are getting paid and have health care, a pension that isn't dependant on the economy like most folks retirement investments, you are good with every restriction put forward with no regard for the cost to the 90+ % of Americans that risk only cold symptoms?

Anyone who has experience in security knows you secure the smallest most critical area with the most extensive measures, and then decrease measures as the area widens. Why restrict all of America when you can restrict the most vulnerable. Concentrate resources on them.

I didn’t say there was no limit. This obviously can’t last forever. To a certain extent it is all a stop-gap solution. The whole point of isolation is not to ensure no one ever gets sick. It’s to ensure we don’t all get it simultaneously and bog down the healthcare system, making it even more dangerous than it already is. I think you already understand this and it wasn’t the point I was trying to make in that post.

My last comment was more to make the point that random doctors’ opinions that this is all an unwarranted freak out are unhelpful and demonstrably untrue from what we have seen in countries that didn’t do enough at the outset of the outbreak.

Mildly off topic, but I got him a Navy and Marine Corps Medal 40 years after the fact. He was telling me about some heroics he had done instead of examining me like I was paying him to, and said he was supposed to get a medal, but left town and never received it. Wish'd he had. I went on the Navy Awards website, and there it was!
That's awesome! Great job!

I'll take my doctors' professional opinion over your non-medical opinion any day. I'm not tell you or anyone else what to believe, just passing on what I was told.

All I know is I'm not smart enough to disregard WHO/CDC recommendations based on my own best guess about "the real situation," and I don't think I've met anybody whose opinions are likely to override those of the aforementioned parties, either -- especially when those parties use influenza as a primary comparison tool we have very little actionable data regarding this new disease except that it is outrageously contagious to a degree (and via a medium) we haven't exactly determined yet, and that it presents the unfortunate possibility of being transmissible via unknowing, asymptomatic carriers.

Oh, and the world collectively sucks at testing for it right now, and that's the only place we're pulling any numbers from.

So maybe it ravages the globe, or maybe it won't be a big deal. DUNNO, NOT A DOCTOR. Just washing my fucking hands and doing what the world's leaders in medicine are suggesting :)

The White House's markedly stronger reaction today to the pandemic was allegedly (1) the result of an Imperial College paper that outlines--based on data from Italy, China, ROK etc.--what might happen in the US and Britain if certain measures are or are not taken.

1. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/16/us/coronavirus-fatality-rate-white-house.html
The paper: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/im...-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf
Financial Times article summarizing the paper: https://ftalphaville.ft.com/2020/03/17/1584439125000/That-Imperial-coronavirus-report--in-detail-/

Financial Times said:
If no measures were taken at all, Imperial projects that the peak number of daily deaths would be reached in three months, that 81 per cent of the population would be infected, and that there would be approximately 510,000 deaths in GB and 2.2 million in the US:

24838

My $.02 (not directed specifically at anyone): obstinance and ignorance get us nowhere on the issue. If the experts are wrong, we will have caused global panic and put the economy at serious risk. Conversely, if the experts are correct but the public chooses not to believe them, then we could lose 2.2 million people in the US alone. That's .7% of the current US population. Multiply that number by the world population of 7.7 billion and I get (public math) 54 million worldwide deaths in the first eight months.

Bottom line: the experts have the data. The experts have analyzed the data and communicated with other foreign clinicians and experts that were in their shoes months ago.

Please, let's put our trust in the experts.

I wonder which version of Fox News will fall flat.

Seriously though, my parents are Deplorables, and when I talked to them, they were like, "It's no big deal, no worse that flu, look how many die in that, I'm not giving up my freedoms, I'm heading to the mall." They got this from Fox binge watching and of course from Dear Leader.

People's lives will be lost due to this months' of gaslighting.
