BDCP - CAC Question

Hey all,

I was recently told by my recruiter that BDCP selectee's (or collegiate program in general) are no longer issued CAC cards before shipping out, despite the Program Authorization (PA 147, 9E) from February still reflecting such and the COP Program guide stating that collegiate members must bring CAC cards to OCS. Has anyone else heard such news? Is this particularly recent?

Being that you're in an active status in BDCP, you should be entitled to some sort of military ID card, even if it's not a CAC. What else did your recruiter say and have you been selected for BDCP yet?

Yeah I was selected back in May and signed papers in July. Notably I had read the PA a couple times through and figured to ask them about it. When I brought it up he said that they were no longer issuing BDCP Selectees CAC cards because of misuse or something along the lines of people taking advantages of the use of such. I thought it was strange and figured I'd ask if anyone else has had this experience, especially the new BDCP selectees.

Were you given any sort of ID?

As a current BDCP select, I can confirm that selectees are still able to obtain a CAC. I had to wait until I received my first paycheck, then went to a PSD on base, presented my orders along with two forms of identification, and was issued a CAC.

Edit: I just received my CAC this past Monday, so unless things have changed in four days, you should be good to go.

I would wonder how you would get access to anything you might need such as pay info or medical care without any form of ID, this just seems odd to me. I guess I could be missing something am I @FormerRecruitingGuru ?

Was going to respond before spam bot gate here.

BDCP is active duty which include full entitlements like a CAC. OP doesn’t need to go through his recruiting office to get a CAC. If he or she is already in the program for a bit they can do direct and get an ID through RAPIDs.

Do I need to bring orders to get my CAC card?

Edit: Would it also be a bad idea to get a CAC card assuming my recruiter told me collegiates don't get CAC cards? I don't want to do something that may sour my relationship to my recruiter

You are going to need it, what if you get sick? You will need that ID card.

No. You're Active Duty. You need a CAC to access the benefits afforded to you by law.

The Personnel Specialist at my local officer recruiting station advised me to bring a copy of my orders with me. However, when I went to get issued my CAC, all they requested were two forms of identification.

Regarding the second question, I agree with @exNavyOffRec—chances are you will need your CAC sometime in the future, especially if you are going to be at school for a bit longer. Whether it’s for medical insurance or something as simple as getting base access, having a CAC will make your life easier.

I suppose I asked my question the wrong way. With the knowledge that my recruiter actively believes I am not entitled to a CAC card, what is the best way to go about getting one that does not feel like a disrespect to my recruiter? With what @CoMa had mentioned, his personnel specialist had advised him to bring orders, which I’d like to do as well.
