Astronaut Dan Burbank, left, and an unidentified man help
Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper (Jeez, could she have anything longer for her nametag???)
after she fainted a second time Friday on a stage at Ellington Field. (Houston Chronicle)

And there you go --- I am woman, hear me roar .... and then faint. Once??? Nope .... twice.

God, I love it .....

I'm embarrassed for her. She should have paid more attention in Home Ec. class and ditched the feminazi hyphenated last name. I've adopted the practice of saying the word "hyphen" when uttering hyphenated names in public so as to draw attention to their ridiculous nature. :D

Good for you! I am a full six inches shorter for my effort. Hyphenated FOB came aboard NSC, I made a public comment, should not have, glad I did it. (Circa 1992 - 2000 FOB = Friend of Bill)

Listening to subtle sidebands of this thread brings to mind an interesting book; "Riding Rockets" by Mike Mullane. Mullane was a former AF WSO and was mission specialist on three shuttle missions. A rather "Kiss and Tell" book, a primary theme was the presence of a a very Pro-Navy bias within the Shuttle Program, including the Program Director and the Chief of Astronaughts, both former Naval Aviators. He links the two shuttle disasters to that Navy bias, not directly, contributory.

Freudian slip Chief?

As for a Naval Avaior bias, I had a former Space Shuttle simulator instructor in my RAG class (long story) and he said that Naval Aviators were pretty dominate in the astronaut corps. When he was thinking about becoming an Astronaut even some of the AF guys told him t go Navy (apparently a little bit more competitive and 'selective' in the AF, forthe right guys and gals). Being a Flight Surgeon doesn't hurt either, there are more than a few of them in the astronaut corps.

BTW:

The first US man in space was a Naval Aviator

The first US man to orbt the earth was a Naval Aviator (Marine)

The first man on the moon was a former Naval Aviator

And this last Shuttle crew had 6 astronauts on the crew. One Canadian, one US Navy Diving officer, one former Naval Aviator and three active duty ones (one Coast Guard). I wonder if the AF has had a similar crew.......;)

Sadly, not the first time I've seen a Coastie try to pick up a woman when she is passed out. Jeez.

Astronaut Selection

This may be a long shot, but is anyone on here doing a packet for this summer's selection? I'm on the Army side, but figured there would probably be more applicants from your side. You know, having those cool jet things and all.

You know someday I'm going to be an astronaut and you all laugh now because I'm not even a pilot but someday I will be and I'm going to step onto the surface of Mars and say something really profound yet hilarious.

Congratulations, you just jinxed yourself into being a SWO :D.

@ the OP: I'm not familiar with the requirements to be an astronaut and I'm too lazy to go look them up right now but during my check-in brief yesterday, the XO mentioned needing 1500 hours of tactical jet time to even be eligible to pilot the shuttle. Are you shooting for another position on the crew or does the Army have some super secret jet that I've never heard of? (you can tell me, I won't tell anyone else...I promise ;))

...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd that's what you get when you put "astronaut" in the title of a thread around here.

I'm surprised there are two replies already and no mention of how much MS flight simulator time someone has yet.
