My bud is seaplane rated, and he says the calm lake probably contributed. Apparently, when it's very glassy, it can add a significant amount to your takeoff distance.
Maybe Mr Beaver didn't have the experience to take that into account.

By the way, the Navy flies a Beaver (maybe two),... but not on floats. I think they call it the U-6A.

You are correct sir! The US Navy Test Pilot School has two of them to tow gliders and possibly as an example of a 'slow-speed' aircraft. They have an NU-1B Otter too.
