Good Evening all I wanted to come on here and get some last minute tips, tricks advice for my 2nd attempt coming up in about 4 days!
History: I scored a 40 3/4/3 (I know that's not very good or passing) this past summer going into the ASTB completely Blind and zero studying. My recruiter really just wanted me to see what the test is like and thought my high eye coordination from playing baseball in college would get my by with minimum scores. That wasn't the case reflecting back on my scores especially with the UAV, Terrian and joystick inverted section which I looked like a deer in highlights to while doing them. Avation section wasn't easy either. Super Blessed I do have 2 more attempts left.
Mistakes: After my 1st attempt I got the ASTB App and started to learn and practice the PMB mainly. while practicing I noticed where I made a lot of mistakes and here they are
DLT- I don't know now why but I thought when you hear the target hear LEFT or Right only focus on that hand aswell only, so example target ear left I took my hand off the right and only listened for odd numbers and when evens came up I figured not to click the clutch but I was suppose to be clicking the trigger on the joy stick where either took my hand off. Really easy mistake which probably costed me some points for my score
UAV- just guessed the whole time when the UAV was pointing straight up I knew what parking lots to click but the UAV pointing east, south or west I just guessed also didn't know the timing on how quick matters aswell.
Terrian- just guessed and didn't know what to too
Joystick- I was all over the place trying my best to track the plane but the inverted got me pretty good and couldn't adjust quick enough to get ok scores.
Emergency parts- didn't realize the knobs spinned and was just clicking the I and E knobs buttons when fire, engine popped up hoping I could remember the steps. obv after the fact I realized they spinned and knew I didn't get my self any points here.
After studying on the ASTB Prep- Im actually prepared this time around I feel like for my 2nd attempt and seeing if anyone could judge my scores I get back from the app below-
DLT- Pretty much get a 100% every time now that I know its both controls are at the same time and the target ear gives you the odd for clutch and the evens for joysticks no matter what ear your listening too. The 8s are little hard to tell if it's 8 or not I'm sure others could agree.
UAV- I can do all 42 in a row under 1.3 seconds every time without the compass paper trick, just knowing now after studying over the course of time where each direction such as N,E,S and W moves to if the UAV isn't pointing straight up north heading wise.
Terrian- Can get about 85% or higher every time due to the app being little tricky some due to how some of the pictures of the maps terrain is hard to see and how zoomed out it is.
Joystick-I have heard that the is the most important part for the PFAR. After Doing the app and getting the Hotas 52 controls I feel way more prepared for this section. I usually score on the lock on target from 35%-45% every time (hoping this is where others scored aswell)
EPs-I understand what needs to be done now, write them down before I start this section and turn the knobs just as the steps/directions say regarding each fire or engine or prop for what EP needs to be cleared and then hit the clutch after all knobs have been turned to where they need to be.
Some Questions I have- On the Terrian Identification on the test, how fast you do it does not matter?? but as long as you get it right inside the 30 second count down ill get all the points for this section? or does the timing in how fast you can the Exact degree such as NNE or ENE ETC matter??
Combined DLT and Joystick- Focus on both or does one matter more then the other here??
The EPs- Ive been seeing people say every time and every test they always happen in the Chronic order so I could possibly already have the 1st EP step up while I do tracking then when It pops up I can just clear it?? anyone here have a good answer or how they did it on the test would be cool to know or just when the EP pops up look down at my paper and do the steps really quick..
Open Ears to anyones feedback who's scored well- Hoping my prep so far has gotten me ready for the next attempt to get higher then all 5s and curious what others thought from my After studying improvements scores in the APP. Im always looking for advice and help regrading the ASTB. If anyone is open to reaching out personally and sharing advice DM me and I like to possibly hop on a call in the near future, I'm all EARs to listen and learn ways to prepare myself in my final days before retesting. Thanks for the time and help if you end up reading all this and reaching out. GOD BLESS!!
