    Steve Jobs is dead.

It doesn't matter if you're an Apple fanboy or a Mac Hater, it's hard to deny the genius that was Steve Jobs. He managed to pull off the impossible by polishing a turd, and then making people think that they had the shiniest piece of gold on the block. I don't think Apple will ever be quite...

    Chow Hall Procedures

I'll be honest, I have no f'n clue. I watched it for 3 weeks as a Candi-O and I still couldn't figure it out. It wasn't as uniform of a process as eating with the spoon. With the fork/knife/spoon system, they have the option of cutting their food, they have to switch the fork between the...

    Chow Hall Procedures

Yeah, our class was the last class to eat with the war spoon only. It is kind of sad that I won't have a chance to see a candidate try and eat a cheeseburger with a spoon. That was always amusing. To be honest, I have to say that eating with the fork and knife is infinitely more complex and...

    Chow Hall Procedures

Well, that's retarded. You know, I learned quite a bit from having to stay late and write on the chalk board. It taught me how to be sneakier, and not get caught. :-) How will our children learn?

    Some pretty cool WWII pictures

As a 1LT, you could be in the XO slot at the company level. Yeah, I know it's not quite the same amount of accountability, but it's still a lot of responsibility. I really found picture #6 to be interesting. I had no idea that the B-17 was involved in attacking the carriers at the Battle of...

    Chow Hall Procedures

Who did you guys have? I think we had to write them out three separate times as well. . .and yes, one of them was a 10 timer. Ughh. . .That made for a VERY late night, especially for those of us who can't write very quickly.

    Chow Hall Procedures

I only did chow hall procedures two times. Once on the weekend, so only one was really on the spot. Yeah, I screwed up some, but that happens. Until you've been doing it a couple of times, you're going to stumble through it.

    Chow Hall Procedures

First. . .the Section Leader is just a random gig. In our class, we went alphabetical. As for chow hall procedures, you'll learn them very quickly, as this is how you'll be eating EVERY day for the first nine weeks. The only change is that your 10 step process now includes using a fork and a...

    NAVY OCS Documentary

Hey brownshoe, there were quite a few Navy/MC priors at OCS while I was there. They go through the program just like the rest of us, the only exception being with the LDO/CWO program. Those guys go through their own program.

    Retirement Drama

Well, if you want to go out with a smile on your face, $1,000,000 in Vegas would be a damn good start. That's a lot of hookers and blow. There might even be some left over for the poker tables. But. . .that aside, even with my modest savings, I've managed to come out ahead (that is, above...

    Retirement Drama

True, but if you were to invest a portion of your income into a retirement account of your choosing, it's not unlikely that after putting in your 20 years, you could make that $650,000 work for you very nicely, especially if you choose to get a kinder and gentler job after you get out . . ...

Just because you don't like what someone has to say, that doesn't mean it's not constructive. Everything I said was true. The sooner you realize that sometimes life kicks you in the balls, and sometimes you just have to push through it. . .the sooner you can find a path that works for you. I...

I'll be honest, I wouldn't want someone with this attitude serving with me in the fleet. You're quick to blame the Navy for YOUR failure. The only thing all of your failures have in common is YOU. If you're this quick to blame the Navy for your shortcomings, I would hate to see what happens...

    T-6B NATOPS

Exactly what Jarhead said. . .We were told that we were one of the last T-34 classes, and that by now, there are only supposed to be two more classes of T-34 students. As usual, that's the ENS gouge, so your mileage may vary. My $.02, enjoy API while you can and spend some time relaxing...

Commissary - Love it or Leave it.

We were told there wouldn't be a deli put in at NAS Whiting because , and I quote "It's not what the retirees want." So much for it being our commissary :-( I suppose I haven't seen a commissary yet that didn't offer a decent price on most of its products. In general, if you shop around...

Commissary - Love it or Leave it.

You know, you don't have to tip the baggers. It is, after all, a tip. If they did a lousy job, they deserve to be rewarded as such. If they did a good job, then great. You also have the option of bagging your own groceries, which I have done a number of times

Nurse in AF or Navy? Active or Reserves? Help!

If you're going to do it, go active. Your initial tour won't be too long, and you can really decide if the Navy is for you. I don't know how the detailing for the nurses works, but you can probably work to get a duty station you want, and have the opportunity to get on a ship and see the world...

Nurse in AF or Navy? Active or Reserves? Help!

I actually thought to myself "I bet one of the EA-6 guys will see this and say something about OKC." In all fairness, there are worse places to be. Though, I will caveat that by saying there are also much better places to be.

Nurse in AF or Navy? Active or Reserves? Help!

How about the peace corps? But really, if you want to travel, the Navy definitely can definitely send you to some amazing locations. The Air Force can send you to . . .Minot, ND. Or, how about Grand Forks, ND? How about Idaho, or Alaska? Or, if you're super lucky, you might be able to...

Updated list of things to bring?

Here's the deal, for the most part you should stick to the list. However, bring whatever you want. If you're not authorized to take it with you, the Candi-O will let you know to put it in your lucky bag. Chances are, you'll be allowed to have it back during candidate officer phase, or possibly...

You can't believe that all they look at is grades, grades are not everything. I had a 3.0 with a B.S. in Technology Management. It really is the whole person concept. OCS or enlisted??

From what I remember, the Army has the most aircraft, though you can imagine that their fixed wing assets are significantly more limited than that of the AF or the Navy.
  38. eas7888

    OCS or enlisted??

Well . . .the only up side I can think of is that you don't typically deploy on a ship. Though, I suppose the Army does have quite a few ships (not quite the Navy. . .), so I suppose even that isn't true.

Ten years ago, I was a college freshman at Kansas State. I had just soloed an aircraft for the first time the day before, and I was getting ready to start the next phase of my flight training that day. So, as I normally would, I woke up, turned on the news, and ate some breakfast. Instead of...

    National Reciprocity for CCW

As a proponent for states' rights, I would have to argue that this bill shouldn't be passed. Though, as a (little l) libertarian, I would argue that there shouldn't have to be concealed carry permits issued either. One should be allowed to carry a weapon on their person if they wish without...

    The basics of API

Yeah, I met a tour guide at the bar that used to fly airships for the Navy, and eventually ended up flying the Goodyear blimp. It really is sad that the O club isn't more like that. Maybe the museum should take over the club.
