Choosing NFO or pilot pipeline (+ bonus: High Flight Threadjack)

Before the sh!tstorm hits, I will point out that NFOs may not be in the marines for too much longer, although I'm sure others can give a good time estimate. It still should be a while, though.

Best way to build up push ups

I did it every now and then (2-3 times per week) for about a month and a half and on a 'surprise' PFT got up to 60-ish pushups and 80-something situps. Then when it was about three weeks to go until the next PFT I did it every day for about 3 weeks. I got up to 81 pushups and 100-something...

Best way to build up push ups

Suggestion I found this method has worked really well for me, no matter where you are along in your training. I read this somewhere, I think it was actually a Navy document... Rest a full 2 minutes between each set. 1st set: As many pushups as you can do in 30 seconds 2nd set: same 3rd set...

    college gpa

Out of all the great advice I got from this forum, the best advice was: Apply Early. Apply Often. Apply Until You Get In. Don't let your worries about GPA etc. keep you from talking to an OSO as soon as possible. The worst that can happen is they don't accept you. This is your career, you...

Actor / Former Sen. Fred Thompson to consider running for GOP Presidential nomination

Slight threadjack, but I almost wish this wasn't the case because I would actually consider voting for Jeb if he could run. Aside from the FCAT, he's done a good job here in Florida. As for McCain...I would have voted for him in the 2000 primary if I had been a year older. I also like...

    Advice/Help

Basically, the board looks at the whole person and tries to make a decision based on that. You seem like you could be a strong candidate, so why not start studying for the ASTB. If you get good scores on the ASTB, along with some other positive factors on your application, you can definately...

    NFO Questions 2

This just might be a typo, but if not, keep in mind that optometrists are not M.D.s and don't perform surgery. An Ophthalmologist is the one that will actually do the procedure, and if you want an opinion from an M.D. you should see on of these folks.

    Letters of Recommendation?

I sent 3 LoRs: 2 employers and 1 professor, and I got a pro-rec. What you should ask yourself when considering what LoRs to get is: What will they write about me that will offer a unique perspective? Of course, this is just my opinion, feel free to get as many letters as you want :)

    Math Problems and such

The best way to study is to use the ARCO or some kind of high school math test like the SAT / ACT and do TIMED practice tests. Not doing timed practice tests would be like preparing for the PRT run by walking a lot. The closest questions to the actual test came from the marine gouge, IMO...

    Question About Getting Flying Time

Work hard. You're getting graded on your performance just like they are. If you're worried about being competitive just to get an air contract...plenty of people get selected with no flight experience, so don't sweat it too much.

    FINDOCS Anxiety

Two quick questions from the knowledge pool: 1) I think NOMI has a copy of a civy eye exam that says my vision is 20/30 uncorrected, and that with a refraction of 1.25 diopters for astigmatism, it corrects to 20/15. The SNA manifest refraction limit for astigmatism is 1.00 diopters, but it...

    Drug use

Same, I had smoked marijuana a few times about 2 years prior to applying and was just pro-rec'd for SNA. Bottom line: It will hurt you because it is a character issue. However, the board realizes that people make mistakes and learn from their mistakes. I wrote a paragraph on my application...

    Motivational Statement MEGA Thread

When I wrote my motivational statement, I focused on two questions: 1) Why do I want to join the Navy? What evidence is there that I will enjoy being in the Navy and be able to stay motivated, overcome the challenges, etc.. 2) Will I serve the Navy well? What evidence is there that I can...

    Physical Fitness Testing

I was told you have to get at least good low in all categories to get in to OCS. There is a thread in this section called PRT standards that has the document that will tell you what those limits are for your age.
  26. Kickflip89

    Astb

Agreed. Those scores aren't too bad, but if your OAR was below 55 I'd definately retake it. Just make sure you study math, and by study math I mean do timed practice tests. Same with mechanics, spatial, and the aviation section. Remember that if you do worse, they'll still use your worse...

Age Req for Navy and Marines

You need to contact an officer recruiter RIGHT NOW, because you have to be under 27 before the date of commission, from what I understand. OCS is about 3 months, and the application process will probably take AT LEAST 4 months for you to get a final select, probably more like 6 if not...

    January Aviation Board

Thanks, MB:) @RPANDERSON: I applied for OCS, the non BDCP route (graduating this April). If you're getting worried, ask your recruiter to check on your status, they should be able to figure out if your package has been reviewed, or if it is still in limbo.

Advice on improving my odds of getting a pilot slot

I'd argue for soccer, but rugby is clearly more manly. Soccer is fun, though:D To original poster: probably a good move focusing on school vs. ASTB. Just make sure when your time to take it comes up you put in some effort to doing timed practice tests in addition to studying.

    Math and Physics requirements

I was the opposite, had less than 2.0 G.P.A. in music, switched majors to physics and made straight As ever since (3 years now). Part of this was me growing up, but another part of it is just really enjoying physics and math. Anyway, I agree that those courses can be difficult.

    Math and Physics requirements

General Physics and Calc 1 and 2 are not in-depth at all, they're just fundamentals and concepts, really. I don't know why the Navy requires them...I suppose because they think officers should understand some basics about functions / nature.
  40. Kickflip89

    After the ASTB

    1. I think my OSO said competitive was 58 6 6 6 or something around there, but that was for OCS. Be safe and try to get at least these kinds of scores. 2. No, just make sure you don't take it until you are prepared to do well. 3. I don't know what the timeline for NROTC is, but if you are...

I think that is the best advice for the essay. Looking at other people's may give you some ideas about how to structure it or something, but as far as content, answer those two questions using your own personal experiences.

    Flight Physical Question

I just did a physical at NAS Jax for my application, and I failed the AFVT depth perception test. However, they gave me a different test and I didn't miss any. As far as I know, as long as you can pass ONE of the three tests they offer, you're PQd. Supposedly the three tests test depth...

Correct Method for Building an aerobic Base

@ xmid, thisguy, and thull: Thanks for the speed advice, but I'm still quite a few weeks away from having a decent base built up. Until I'm ready for those workouts I figure playing soccer twice a week for about 45 minutes is decent strength training (lots of sprints and really light jogging)...
