    January Aviation Board

If the board did get pushed back to the 5th, then results should be posted by the 29th. With all the trouble folks have had with the new CNRC system, we might not hear anything until March. I still have school / work to keep my mind occupied, but I feel for those who have nothing to do but wait.

    Question about applying procedures

The point is we don't know how hard the LSAT is / how good your study habits are. You CAN suck it up and study for two tests at one time...but only you know if that is a good idea. Here are the circumstances that I put together my package under: Last semester I was taking the following...

    Question about applying procedures

Apply Early. Apply Often. Apply until you get selected. But, if you want to go to law school, then by all means focus on your law school exam first, then go back to studying for the ASTB. About 2-3 weeks of math prep should probably be sufficient unless you really suck at math/have bad study...

Correct Method for Building an aerobic Base

I know this has been discussed before, and I've looked at various sites such as Runner's world etc, but I still have a few questions about the proper way to go about improving my run time. When I took the PFA, my run time sucked because I let myself get too far out of shape to really sustain...

    No more contact lense waivers?

This is pretty much what I was counting on. I think I have a decent chance of reading the 20/20 line with the 1.00 diopter limit for astigmatism, so I put down SNA as well as SNFO. And besides, we're geeks not dorks ;)
  8. Kickflip89

    No more contact lense waivers?

Are you sure? I was under the impression that waivers would not be considered for SNA applicants. Would be nice if they were, since my vision is 20/30 but with a 1.25 astigmatism. Also, I have heard both that the board met already, and that it will be pushed back to this coming Monday, so who...

    Preparing for the ASTB

Start studying about 4 weeks before you take it, and you should do fine. If you are bad at math or mechanics, however, you could consider doing a few exercises on the weekends or something. Focusing on school is probably the better choice, though.

Report of Iranians Ambushing U.S. Soldiers

Yeah, didn't you read Sum of All Fears?;) Obviously we'd find out where the bomb came from...as long as Jack Ryan was on the scene!!:icon_tong

Report of Iranians Ambushing U.S. Soldiers

    1. Right, so either diplomacy/inspections or military action is the only real way to do that. Right now, we don't seem to have any leverage to use against Iran at the bargaining table, so military action looks to be the best option. 2. I am by no means an expert, but I'm not sure what military...

Report of Iranians Ambushing U.S. Soldiers

^^agree w/ Brett. Sometimes I wonder if the best way to get a message to Iran is to develop alternative sources of energy as quickly as possible. Actually, Jim Cramer suggested putting a huge tax on gasoline in order to drive down consumption of oil / speed the development of alternative...

Report of Iranians Ambushing U.S. Soldiers

I saw some guy on TV yesterday saying that a good option would be a precision strike against Iranian nuclear program sites. I don't really know enough about the region to know what kind of retaliation that would bring, but they suggested Iran might try to forcefully lower oil exports, and could...

Report of Iranians Ambushing U.S. Soldiers

I saw this on MSNBC while doing homework, and I *think* this time article is alluding to it? In any event, it seems like things are certainly getting "interesting": EDIT: Ah, this is what I am talking about

    NEW ASTB Overview

Sounds strange to me...is that the Air Force test? /shrug I haven't heard of the board not wanting ASTB scores for pilot / NFO. Sounds like a good question to ask your recruiter.

    First Post

If you apply for BDCP or straight-OCS, you can only get accepted for positions you put down on your application. So, if all you want to be is a NA, then just keep applying for BDCP or OCS with your primary choice NA, and no secondary / third choices. Will you get accepted? Who knows, but if...

    January Aviation Board

More unconfirmed rumor-mongering: My recruiter mentioned the results are supposed to be out on Monday, the 29th. I Don't know if this date is the paper-date, or the real one. Unfortunately, it looks like my package wasn't "reviewed" before the board met, so I guess I'll get bumped to the Feb...

    Passing Score

I think that site is bum gouge as far as ASTB scores are concerned. Your OSO should have access to the current "competitive" scores for each position, so just ask when you go in to talk to him/her.

    New PRK procedure

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds to me like it is not approved because of the creation of that whatever-flap, which is what they are trying to avoid with PRK. I'd wait for some verification about this before getting the surgery done.

    Air Slots

Ok, perhaps deserve was the wrong word to use. Clarification for the sake of happiness: I want to be selected, I believe I can convince the board to select me, but understand that I might not. I am a hard worker and I believe I can earn a spot in OCS, and that I can at least give the Navy my...

    Air Slots

My philosophy is that I am prepared to wait at least until March before finding out if I am pro-rec'd. LOVE THE WAIT, I just spent an intense and stressful month putting together my package (while going through finals last semester). Now I get to focus on school, some exciting research at...

    Current OCS App Competetive Profile

ASTB is a black box. The only sections that matter for OAR are the first three sections (math mechanics reading), who knows how they are weighted. Probably it changes to keep things nice and Gaussian.

    Technical Degree

The physics department teaches a course called "Mathematical Physics" that hits up some basic linear algebra. Transforming it to a hilbert space formalism just took a little reading and a class like PDEs.

    Technical Degree

Dork humor is alright sometimes. www.Bash.org has some funny MIRC logs. I don't remember what the M stands for, maybe multi-user, but the rest is Internet Relay Chat, for those who are curious.
  27. Kickflip89

    Technical Degree

If you're wanting to disprove Einstein, you're gonna have to go into experimental, probably. Some sort of Engineering double major would be good for that. If you want to go into theoretical physics, just double major in math. In the course of my physics degree I've taken Vector Calc, Complex...

Diffrence Pro rec vs. Fin Rec

Old system has changed a bit. Instead of ADDOCS and FINDOCS, it's now PRODOCS (basic application stuff + EPSQ) and MEDOCS (bunch of paperwork + physical + PFA scores)
  29. Kickflip89

    Technical Degree

I'd say math is definitely a technical degree. Applied Math and Theoretical Physics are almost the same thing, anyway (at the undergraduate level). Applied Math just has broader scope.

    essays

Best advice I got (I haven't been picked up yet, however) was to write about two things: 1) Why you want to join the Navy (why the Navy will be good for you) 2) What you have to offer (why you will be good for the Navy) Being specific and relating your life experiences to these two topics is...

    Choices...

I think the only people that can answer those questions are the folks on the selection boards. My $.02: Put what you want in the order you want it. Don't put down anything you do not want to do. If all you want to do is fly, then just put down NA. If you would also enjoy being an NFO, then...

My $.02: You are a sophomore in college, which means you are half-way to the prize already! Why start all over just to get into the academy when you can get a sweet deal like BDCP? If you're wanting to make a career out of the navy, going to the academy could ?maybe? be worth starting all...

    GPA question

I am sort of in a similar position. My GPA when I sent in my application was only about a 2.9. I was told that for people applying to go straight to OCS (i.e. not BDCP) test scores are a little more important than GPA. Best advice anyone can give you is: go see a recruiter, apply early, apply...

    ATSB Questions

My recruiter said that GPA is more important than test scores for BDCP guys. She also said that test scores were more important than GPA for straight-to-OCS applicants like myself. If this is true, that could have something to do with him being recommended to send in the package. All the...

Navy Versus Airforce Who is truely better

Whoever is better. Not trying to be an a$$hole, but pilots in both services have the opportunity to excel. Sometimes the Navy guy wins, sometimes the AF guy wins. No one is going to sit here and tell say something like "OOoooh, you want to be a good pilot? Why didn't you say so? In that...

Navy Versus Airforce Who is truely better

It's probably going to be very difficult for you to make a good decision about something like this until you're a little older. Being a pilot isn't really about being the most bad a$$ d00d in town, as far as I can tell. It's more about hard work, and working with whoever you need to to...
