    H-1 Helo questions

Corey; reach back with your dirty little sandwhich clamps, grasp the yellow handles, pull and eject...eject...eject! You had the distinct possibility of developing some very good mentors on here, but I'm afraid you've chosen poorly.

    H-1 Helo questions

    H-1 Helo questions

The quality of your back enders can make or break your flight. Some are so intuitive that every action of the crew is seemless. There others that make it a pain in the ass from start up to shut down. Of course, they probably say the same about us.

It's good to be Tom (Cruise that is)

I had an HGU-55 helmet built up by Flight Suits Ltd in El Cajon, CA around 99' and when I picked mine up, they were just finishing Cruise's custom helmet, painted traditional Pitts red with white stripes to match his S-2B. You'd think a guy like that would at least be able to keep the helmet...

It's good to be Tom (Cruise that is)

As Joe said, there are true two-seat, dual control/instrumented TF-51s, with an enlarged canopy so you can sit upright. Most P-51s now days are unmodified, but have a second jump seat jammed in with no instruments, just a stick and rudder pedals. The back is very uncomfortable, and after about...

It's good to be Tom (Cruise that is)

Tom Cruise has never soloed either of his P-51's. Nor will his studio contract allow him to. I have an aquaintence named Matt out of Van Nuys who has given him all his dual and backseats with him whenever he flies. Matts' made a career of flying other people's high performance aircraft. He flies...

Save a JDAM for this couple...

Actually, I think a soothing massage with my 3,000 psi pressure washer would be appropriate. Then when they start jack-hammering, and/ or bleeding, maybe a trip to the big powder coating oven. Sorry, I got carried away...it's the training...maybe this should be moved to the "torture" thread.

Navy vs. Army vs. Air Force Aviation

Let me phrase it this way. The only reason I'm an Army Aviator is I was too old for Navy and Air Force flight training (in that order) when I finally got released by the SEAL Teams. The Army's admission criteria is somewhat more flexible than its sister-services.

    Army Aviation

The fine print that is usually glossed over during the euphoria of the thought of going to flight school; 1. Investigate, but don't count on the WOFT bonus. Army funding changes by the month. Don't delay submitting your application looking for the bonusm you're just losing time-in-grade...

    Army Aviation

I can assure you, if selected for WOFT, you are guaranteed to fly. In fact, in your first 15 mos after graduation from flight school, you'll probably log between 500-700 hours...in OIF/OEF. If you truly want to learn to fly helicopters, an Army Warrant Officer Aviator is one of the best deals...

Renting and flying clubs in San Diego

I think what she meant to say was; In addition to NASNI Flying Club, you might want to look at Gillespie Field (SEE) and Montgomery Field (MYF) as well. Both have two or three reputable flying clubs with a variety of aircraft on the line. Find the airport closest to your house and go wander...

Why do Navy 60's not fly with forward cockpit doors removed a la Army?

It's SOP for 160th to fly with cockpit doors removed. MH-47s have even had them off for certain missions. (They're a pain in th ass to re-install) Certain WX conditions make it impractical to fly with them off though. When you spend as much time as we do hovering over a bridge wing, staring at a...

    Kudos to HS-10 bubba

The military makes the helo-borne sniper work. Our targets are more defined. Law enforcement has some great shooters, and pilots, but there's liability issues that no govt, local or federal is willing to underwrite. What if your helicopter catches the slightest updraft, your shooter out on the...

    love me or hate me

I believe I fairly stated each service had it's detractors, but the AF appears more so. Possibly because as previously indicated, there's just more command oversight, whereas in the Navy junior enlisted and officers are given more responsibility to make sound decisions. I know as an E-6 I was...

I couldn't be more serious when I tell you that I was standing in the ticket line of a mid-eastern country's airline awaiting a flight back to the U.S. When an AF officer in civilian attire caught my eye. His carry-on luggage consisted of his helmet bag adorned with C-130 patches (and his...

    love me or hate me

Not to mention I have yet to discover an Air Force pilot that didn't refer to a reg in detail to explain exactly why he couldn't accomplish the mission, rather than looking for the one that allowed him to accomplish the mission. Even Army aviators realize the Air Force is at best, a corporate...

    Salute a warrant officer?

    barefoot running

    barefoot running

There's a fine line between hard and stupid. Wear shoes, or you can choose to pay for your out-of-the-box thinking when your 40. I learned the hard way two rules of running: wear proper footwear, and never run on sand unless you're forced to. It does allows horrible torsion movements of your...

    Army Aviation subforum

Unfortunately I'm going to have to agree with A-4. While it would be convenient for a perspective Army Aviator to get comparative information on a Naval Aviation forum, it would probably be doinghim/her a dis-service. The 4 or five of us on AW probably can't provide a wide enough spectrum of...

Navy helo community....what's the latest news?

Believe me, it's been said many times by us knuckle-draggers that it would be ideal if NAVAIR would allow a contingent of Navy 60's to assimilate into SOCOM and partake of the funding/training. It would greatly relieve the demand on our airframes and crews. The AF is next to useless in that...

Pilot broke rules when he buzzed Downtown

Why in the hell would people be panicked about the sound of a jet over the city? He wasn't at 100' AGL, and the last time I checked, even the common mouth breather hasn't heard on CNN about a rash of Hajii-crewed Sukois' swooping over America's population centers. They make it sound like the...

    Blackwater Helo down in Iraq

Well, when I told one of their recruiters I was considering staying in because I was eligible for the 25K/yr bonus, he told me "Dude, you'll make more than that on per diem in a year." And do forget, in addition to those benefits, you can get left on an angry street to die at the hands of a Hajii mob, or stranded on top of a windswept mountain range with no hope of any vehicle or American flag on their shoulder to back you up. Every time you think how cool flying for a...

Actually, I think the Guard and Army Reserves are the biggest screw job going these days. The guard used to be the best deal going before 9-11. Now, they deploy as much (or more),are expected to accomplish the same taskings with habitually less training and resources than their AD counter...

    Want to fly....Bad....?

The Army is a great opportunity to fly for those who might not be otherwise be eligible for military wings. 152 vs Warrior?

Badger, It appears to me what you want to do is 1. build (logbook) time, and 2. improve your aeronautical decision making/experience. Aircraft type is irrelevant. If you're looking for a plane that will most closely replicate a 34C, ou're wasting your time, unless you have well over $100/hr...
