    Phelps does it

I gotta agree with Spitz in the sense that if everyone is considering it such a huge milestone to break, which it will be, then why can't anyone extend the courtesy of inviting him to go? True, it's the Olympics, but just expecting him to go because of Micheal Phelps and what he may accomplish...

    Dangerously low fuel levels

The time requirements are different based upon VFR or IFR flying, but that reg you posted applies to practically every aircraft that flies (not sure about ultralights, etc).
  4. insanebikerboy

    Dangerously low fuel levels

Aircraft will go up with less than a full tank. Can't speak for other communities but in my experience in helo-land is if we don't need a full tank, we don't take it. We'll calculate a conservative fuel burn per hour and then calc how much we need for our mission/training, take that load plus a...

    Thoughts on the T-34

I dunno about the weight thing. I've got 30 pounds on you and I never had any seat fail on me. Granted, you've had a lot more flights in it than I did, but never even had one feel loose.

I doubt someone who continues to get airsick would make it that far to fly the 60.

    Thoughts on the T-34

I enjoyed the hell outta flying it. The plane isn't the Corvette of the sky but it's pretty capable and a lot more capable than I think most studs realize and are able to put the plane through. It's a shame we don't do more aerobatics in it. My only beef is like what's been said. I'm 6'3" so my...

    Selection out of Primary/Advanced

It wasn't the issue of doing loops/turns/etc, without announcing it or anything like that. It was a situation like what SNA2007 said. Early on I started trying to plan out my flights, sequence of maneuvers, OLF's, etc. Some ip's really dug it, but some got pretty upset for whatever reason...

    Jax gouge?

Considering I've never stepped foot in the city and I'll be moving there in a few months, any and all advice on places to live would be great. Any communities/areas to avoid? Which one's are the best? So far, all I've heard about is that Orange Park is supposed to be a nice area. How's...

    Selection out of Primary/Advanced

I guess it depends on how you define chairflying. I was never one to sit down and think through every phase of a flight (i.e., I know guys who would go step by step from takeoff to landing), or how I would specifically and physically move in the cockpit. For me personally, ever since primary...

Gun-control groups fear top activist was NRA spy

Maybe I just missed it, but where has it been proven that the NRA had any undercover agent working for them? Like it was said before, there are associations between the NRA and this lady, but nothing has yet to come out positively linking the NRA to any inside spying on them. Simply having her...

What do you think makes a "bad" leader?

Yeah, it's possible, they can somewhat go hand in hand. But, imo if someone is dishonest, you can generally "count" on them being dishonest. It's much harder to "count" on someone who is inconsistent.
  17. insanebikerboy

What do you think makes a "bad" leader?

The interesting thing comparing the top two so far, dishonesty and inconsistency, is that if someone is dishonest, you can usually get a grasp on their dishonesty and adjust accordingly. However, if someone is inconsistent, you can't adjust anything because it's always going to be different and...

Man accused of pumping jet fuel into his car

Read John Glen's book a few years ago and he talked about pumping Avgas into his car when he was younger. It's along the lines of what MidnJac was saying though, he had an old carbureted car so it actually helped it some.

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

It's a somewhat reasonable expectation that if you are getting several above MIF scores per flight you should be doing ok, but to say that getting purely MIF is bad isn't exactly true. As it's been outlined, your scores are compared to your peers, so theoretically you could get only MIF the...

    Long Range Pistol Shooting

That was the biggest thing for me too, the trigger pull on those free guns. I first started my Hammerli at about 110 grams but after I got used to it I had the pull down to about 60-70 grams. Luckily I never shot the bench on pick-up though! :D

Halon doesn't suck the air out, it displaces the air because it's heavier. So, if you breathe it in, it takes the place of the air, it doesn't necessarily suck it out. Same difference/effect in the long run, but it's possible to be in a space with it discharged and survive if you aren't in there...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Seems to be my experience also. Show up, know your stuff cold for the brief, don't act like an ass, get treated well. Don't, well, stand by. Funny you say that, I felt like I was treated so much more like a member of the squadron in the primary VT's than I was in the HT's.

Obama says we should learn Spanish.

I think the biggest difference when you compare the U.S. with Europe is the close proximity of the countries in Europe. Here in the U.S. you can drive for three days due east and still be in the same country. Do that in Europe and you'll go from Portugal and end up in Russia. It would only...

Yes, there are three upstairs on the helo side of the sim building. Just go upstairs, walk to the middle of the motion sims and you'll see the briefing spaces and the CPT's are in the back of the briefing room.

Obama says we should learn Spanish.

It's interesting you bring up the ease of travel in a discussion about international languages. English is the recognized language for flying, so if travel and ease of it is what makes, or at least helps, the world go round, I can't see Indian or Mandarin "evolving" into the language of...

I've known them both. Guys that were #1 and got their second or third (or not even on their sheet) choice. I've also known guys who weren't anywhere near the top and got their first choice. Selection is a black magic. Quality spread, timing, grades, instructor/CO input all play into it. To base...

    .357 Magnum Question

It's a great training tool, like he said helps train out the anticipation. For guys that handload, try making dummy bullets, MARK THEM WELL, and then put them in a bowl/box with live rounds. Grab randomly and load. I did that a lot with my .357 Sig and 9mm and you'll see any tweaks in your...

Not prohibiting it doesn't necessarily mean it's allowed either. Colleges are a tad different than the Navy.
