    Cross Country Destinations?

Austin, TX - Awesome party town. Great bars, great restaurants, great history (the Capitol building is really cool), and HOT CHICKS EVERYWHERE. San Antonio, TX - The River Walk is awesome. All sorts of bars and restaurants along the river in a nice scenic walkway. Lots of fun. Louisville, KY -...

    Going to college completely FREE!

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where I went to school, which is cross-town with The College of the Holy Cross NROTC, pays full room and board for scholarship NROTC students. Nothing like a $120,000 education for absolutely free.

Gulfstream V with Gear Problem on news

Hey, as a bonafide postwhore, I recognize it when I see it. And it got reset like a month ago. You try dropping manual bombs in low-vis and through clouds and then we'll talk about whether I should be flying...

    Who flies the Buckeye?

Haven't heard that one. The information I got was from sitting in on a RAMP presentation by the Boeing engineers. They came from, well, Boeing, to talk about improvements to the T-45C system. Some of them were the ability to input transponder codes via the DEP, color MFDs, a FADEC (sp?), and the...

Ok cool, I can do that. Wait one. TW-1 has changed a lot since you left.... VT-9 is now the fvcked up squadron and VT-7 is chugging right along. No more Advanced guys laying around, all TS now. I started February 28, I will finish in March or earlier.

    Jet questions

Yeah, you did miss a lot. See my previous post. It outlines the stages. As for time to train, the T-45C MCG (yes it's different than the T-45A) states 50 calendar weeks. I don't know if the T-45A syllabus is shorter, or if it has to do with Kingsville's double-pump-all-the-damn-time...

[Gun] Want to read something scary? UN and China on gun control

Different kind of fragmentation there. That has to do with the bullet design for the 5.56mm and not the effects of a bullet hitting a hard target (which water is at close range). And I assume that was an outdoor range. Imagine that indoors.... OUCH.

[Gun] Want to read something scary? UN and China on gun control

I didn't see the episode, but I heard it described many times. If I recall, they really fvcked up the way they did it. They shot the water from point blank ranges. With many rifle bullets, this will completely fragment the bullet on impact. For example, the 7.62x51mm bullet does not reach...

    Weapons & Tactics in Iraq: A Grunt's perspective ...

I believe this was attributed to overused magazine springs. Metal fatigue sets in after a while and they just won't work right. Not a new concept. A function of multiple problems. For one, the M855 62gr ammo was NEVER designed to be shot out of a 14.5" barrel. This GREATLY reduces the...

[Gun] Want to read something scary? UN and China on gun control

The .50AE carries energy, yes, but it's still a handgun load. You're not gonna lose your arm unless MAYBE it smashes through a joint. Movies don't have it right. They don't have anything right, usually. See guys shoot in a bathroom and they can still talk normal and hear normal? yeah right...

    Who flies the Buckeye?

No, but Boeing is working on a synthetic aperature radar to put in the T-45, presumably for the NFOs.
  21. Fly Navy

[Gun] Want to read something scary? UN and China on gun control

What about a hit from a .50AE in the arm? Are you down and out? I've shot an integrally (sp?) suppressed MP5, which will be a little different from say, a can screwed onto the end of a pistol. With that, the sound of the action was louder than the shot. But that's the nice thing about...

Hopefully the technology from the Comanche will be used to make better, newer, cheaper aircraft. Like the F-22 in regards to the F-35 and the USS SEAWOLF in regards to the USS VIRGINIA.

    Who flies the Buckeye?

You know what I meant, wasn't trying to slight. I've gotten a chance to fly a MH-60S and a CH-46D, and both were fun as sh!t. Respect goes your way, but still, come on :)

    Who flies the Buckeye?

Yeah, I thought I remembered an ECMO acquaintance of mine saying they did some interesting A/A stuff, but I figured I'd let you chime in. I've been told the Prowler guys here do the best "bugs" in the ACM stage, which makes sense.
  28. Fly Navy

    Who flies the Buckeye?

Except, you know, Prowlers are Tac-Air and are probably familiar with the concepts. Finding a tanker anyone? (just a guess) It's not like say a CH-46 guy teaching how to do ACM. I have a feeling they wouldn't let that slide.

Is Commanche cancelled or shelved? I used to know, but I forgot.
  30. Fly Navy

    Final attack cones

Nah, that's not OPSEC, from what I can tell anyway. Attack cone distance is nothing but a function of simple geometry. I can't answer his question though because well, we don't attack the target in weps like that... we just use the pattern which isn't very realistic, just gets the job done.

    Weapons & Tactics in Iraq: A Grunt's perspective ...

Yep, like Squeeze, I've seen the same "report". It's totally bunk. It is widely regarded that it is unauthentic and a farse. While there are certain statements in there that could be considered true, the facts just aren't there in a lot of statements. It's the classic big vs small bullets, and...

That and the ubiquitous Beretta. They were using that a while too.
  34. Fly Navy

    The break

It's a function of airspeed and abeam distance. In the daytime, a midfield break at 350 knots.... snatch it on to a good 15 units AOA and play the pull to reach a 1.0 abeam. If you maybe pull 17 units, you'll be tight and have to adjust... pull like a pvssy and do 12 units and you go...
  35. Fly Navy

    The break

    That's not a break, it's a turn.
  36. Fly Navy

    The break

It's a function of airspeed, how "on the ball" you are that day, course rules, SOP, and ATC. Having a sh!thot day? Go for the approach end numbers at 350.... it's not really a traffic pattern as a circle. Feeling not so hot? Departure end at 300. That's... not much of a break. A good...

    Who flies the Buckeye?

You're a 9 guy.... he only flies with you guys so maybe you know.... is he restricted to just FAM and BI/RI type flights or can he do Weps, ACM, etc? I'd think a P-3 guy in ACM would be.... ridiculous.

Good luck defending yourself in court on that one. Full-auto, while legal in most places, isn't looked kindly upon in use as a defensive weapon. It's seen as offensive. That and good luck finding a Glock 18 you can afford to buy.

    The break

What he said. Coming in with some smack on the jet and then using a turn and G-forces to slow down is much more effective than pulling the throttle back, popping the speedbrakes, waiting... waiting, putting the gear and flaps down, stabilizing, and then trucking in for 3-5 miles.

  48. Fly Navy

Does the Marine Corps change political views?

It's not just military. Anyone that deals with tangible responsibility tends to lean right. Businessmen, people that handle money (no, not bank tellers), etc. There is obviously deviation from this depending where you live, but it seems to hold in many cases. Academics? No responsibility...
