SNA spots for ROTC going away?

God I love the rumor mill. I can only imagine the helmet fires this is causing in the various ROTC units and up at USNA.

Return of Turboprops to CAS role?

The difference I would argue is that the COIN idea isn't quite the change that the Zulu Cobra is. In my opinion, the Z is a brand new aircraft.

Return of Turboprops to CAS role?

But they aren't developing a new aircraft/airframe, it's an upgrade of a currently existing product. If the argument is that the upgrades make it difficult, then that defeats the purpose of using this type of aircraft to begin with.

Navy Denied My Criminal Waiver for A Commission

If you take a turd and polish it, all you get is a polished turd. Our choices dictate what kind of life we lead, and considering you showed a consistent path of misconduct (not just one, maybe two, offenses), it's not surprising you got denied hard. Deal with it, move on. Contribute to society...

Return of Turboprops to CAS role?

I would argue that if we didn't have the excruciatingly long acquisition cycle that we have, it would actually take a relatively short amount of time. The flying skills are already there. Find any pilot in the airwing and I'd argue they can do the stick and rudder skills. Teach them the...

    Microsoft Office for cheap...

Yes there is an agreement with Microsoft that you get the Microsoft Enterprise 2007. It's all of the Office products they offer and you pay I think $20 or $30 total. Check your pm.

Return of Turboprops to CAS role?

So what fills the role for the time they are in Afghanistan? That's not really rhetorical as I disagree with the argument that we don't spend money now because we may not need the capability after we're done.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

    Military Spouses Residency Relief Act

I can't speak for the rest of your post, but if that's the sole reason you're changing your state of residency just be careful. Some states will go after you for back taxes if you move back at a later point in life.

FAA MCA - Military Competance Airplane

I think the part I bolded is why the FAA has changed their mind and doesn't give the instrument airplane anymore. In primary you never receive authorization from the Navy, i.e. sign for the aircraft, for an instrument flight. That's a big difference as compared to the nav solos in advanced.
  16. insanebikerboy

FAA MCA - Military Competance Airplane

Additionally, wouldn't an individual also have to have a rating to begin with? I.e., a private license, before they could apply any time towards an instrument rating?

Where are the Carriers, helos, CODs, etc? Heading to help with Haitian Relief effort!

One of the last flights I flew before we left, a Senior Chief at the grassy area wouldn't load our helo because they didn't have cranials. Lord knows a cranial will stop a rotor blade! But yes, for the most part it was nice being able to operate without so much sticklers.

Where are the Carriers, helos, CODs, etc? Heading to help with Haitian Relief effort!

For me it was the Sacred Heart hospital up north. A hospital out in the middle of the jungle and the docs were able to stabilize and save a lot of people, with nothing but what supplies were flown in, that we in turn flew to the Comfort. I dunno if you get how true that statement is. Did you...

USS Vinson portcall in Mayport (no, she's not staying, just visiting)

Where are the Carriers, helos, CODs, etc? Heading to help with Haitian Relief effort!

Just got home from Haiti, it's much worse than the pictures show but at least we're getting help into them. It'll take years for them to get the place truly back on it's feet.

Able to make my wedding during aviation training?

Take the slot, you'll always look back and say "what if" if you get married over flying. The Navy, more specifically your boss in whatever training squadron your at, will more than likely give you a few days. I have heard of guys getting the day prior and day of the wedding or maybe the day of...

    BOQ REVIEW's

I'm split on the best one in San Diego. The Q on the sub base is being redone, in that the interiors of the rooms are being redone. About half of them are updated, have nice furniture, the beds are actually really comfortable and it's enjoyable to stay there. I preferred it over anything on...

    WHICH Brown Shoe?

Florsheim. I saw those at the Nex, looked almost identical but it had a cordovan color instead of brown. I tried them on, pretty nice, but the color was just too noticeably different.

    WHICH Brown Shoe?

Screw that man, I bought the set but wore them once or twice and I hate them. Not much except for a sole that literally fell off the shoe... I have my original leathers from boot camp that are still going strong so a shoe that I've only worn infrequently at best shouldn't just fall apart...

    WHICH Brown Shoe?

So the standard NEX Bates Light brown shoes I bought four years ago had the soles fall off last time I was on duty. Obviously I need new ones, does anyone have a suggestion on something other than the Bates? I searched the brown shoes thread but the links to Zappos aren't working anymore.

Better to own or rent in Jacksonville, given current economy?

I've been here over a year now and I finally had to drive through the Blanding-295 interchange during afternoon rushhour. Good God that was painful. When you move here completely avoid anything down Blanding or in the Argyle area. It's a shame because those are nice communities but the drive...

I think that's the fine line between civ and military flight time, as per the 3710 rule of actually leaving the deck vice starting up, taxiing, etc, which is countable in a civ book.

New wings approved for AMDO/Aviation LDO/CWOs

Well, the three basic tenants of flying are aviate, navigate, communicate. Along that line of thought, after flight school every student aviator is fully capable of flying their aircraft through the full range of flight. However, if we are talking tactical know-how, in advanced each student is...

The downside of women serving alongside men in fighting ships, subs, squadrons, etc.

A lot of females I've seen in the military flaunt the fact that they are female and can pretty much have the choice of whatever flavor of sausage they desire. I saw that more often when I was enlisted than now, but instincts are instincts, sometimes leading people to say damn ethics, morals, and...

    Check-In/Classing Up

    Another "praise the Raptor" article

My thought is that they wanted to test a proof of concept and it sounds a lot cooler in the resulting report if the brain could "fly" a sim of a multi-gazzillion dollar F-22 instead of a Microsoft Flight Sim Cessna 172.
