    Transition to FTS

VR FTS pilots are gone frequently. There are some 6 month dets overseas that rotate through the C-130 dudes for an actual deployment, I'm not for sure if it's a specific C-130 squadron or is shared, I'll see if I can get some clarification for you asap. The majority of time gone for VR FTS dudes...

    NEWS UAV 'Combat' Flight Time?!

That was my thought, simply as a discriminator of operational versus conus/training. However, I can only imagine the ascot wearing AF UAV dude at the bar bragging about all of his green ink.

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

Everyone wants a trophy. Time for a sea story. As a young j.g., I got to my first squadron ready to do God's work. I do the full workups so I go through all of the overland training, do all of the CSAR/CAS/etc that is required. We then deploy and 90% of my time is spent in plane guard. I...

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

I will never fault the dudes out there flying, they are doing stuff that we aren't. I'm happy they got the pick up. However, the whole 60S community is seeking validation right now. I should rephrase, CSAR is a validated requirement but this PR event did not meet what would help give...

USN Pros and Cons of Jets/Props/Helos

"If you are in trouble anywhere in the world, an airplane can fly over and drop flowers, but a helicopter can land and save your life.” - Igor Sikorksy I wanted jets badly in primary, and had the grades, but alas my legs are too long for the ejection seat. Granted, my career for a Navy...

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

HSC-5 got a PR event. Not a CSAR event, there is a difference. After seeing behind the curtain, this, in my opinion, does not validate Navy CSAR. The guys out there got to fly and pick some dudes up, which is good, but there were some serious process flaws, which was bad. That's about all that...

    Career Reflections by Pickle

The board can in fact see that you were enlisted, but it's only how much time you spent as a prior enlistee. There's a little line on either the ODC/OSR that shows the time in years and months. There's no detail on what you actually did. It sounds like you have it covered with the pseudo...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

When I was a nuke I worked with quite a few 7 year chiefs. One was 25, I wish I could remember his name. It's a double edged sword, because a person not only has to get the paperwork but also get through the Chief's board. That said, you always expect a Chief to be some crusty, salty S.O.B...

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

What is interesting is how the future is changing now that the LCS buy has been reduced. That may free up aircraft for a sooner than expected transition.

But then if we did that, how would be able to argue wildly with emotion?
  17. insanebikerboy

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

The best way I can explain it is due to the flavor of money. The operating budgets were mainly sourced inside the Navy budget via OCO funds, which for years wasn't an issue for SOCOM or the Navy. When budgets and OCO funds started going away the Navy was looking to save money and 84/85 was an...

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

SOCOM wants the two squadrons and had future budgets POMd to fund them. Unfortunately it's not quite so simple to make a non-SOF entity fall under the SOCOM as one would think. Also, there was some serious rice-bowl protection going on and no one realized just how severe the loss would be till...

I work with reservists so this is what I'm familiar with. http://dopma-ropma.rand.org/sanctuary.html As for an active duty guy that was never a reservist, I think selective continuation may be what would apply. http://dopma-ropma.rand.org/selective-continuation.html

Those sailors and officers are who I'm talking about, not Joe Schmo. Here's are a few examples that I have seen for my community specifically that illustrates what I'm talking about. - Only a single pilot plans the mission, instead of all pilots involved with mission planning. - Admin phases...

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

You just made my point. You can't "train to tactics" in a short time, there is a huge difference in being familiar with and being an expert. It is possible to be an expert in tactics even if you don't have a specific enemy to train against. I'll use an example from my community. Experienced...

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

I'm not saying there needs to be incessant training for missions that won't ever occur. I just see a pervasive mindset of too much time and energy spent dealing with the admin part of the Navy at the expense of actually being awesome at the tactics we need to know.

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

While I agree that the likelihood of a regular Navy helo squadron to go in to Iran with guns blazing is pretty small, I do think that the mentality can be trained to.

Biggest reason I've heard from dudes using them everyday is that it's just overall lighter, even with a larger capacity mag, than the 1911 or other .45 cal pistols.

NDAA FY2016 Changes to Military Retirement

Just to clarify, just because something will take a lot of hard work isn't a reason to not do it, especially when your job as a division chief or a div-o is to, well, take care of your junior enlisted. Not everyone will buy into the TSP, and yes there are junior enlisted with 10 kids and a...

You're living in a dream world if you think everyone does everything purely for money. There are folks in every walk of life that do the job they love even at the expense of a higher paycheck. NDAA FY2016 Changes to Military Retirement

Ike has already said partly what I was going to type, but the "quality" argument implies that those of us choosing to stay in do so only for the money and are therefore of lesser quality than those who have chose to go somewhere else. There is also an assumption in most of the comments I've...

NDAA FY2016 Changes to Military Retirement

I can honestly say that as an 18 year old fresh out of bootcamp, the last thing on my mind was investing. It will take A LOT of mentorship on the part of the chiefs and div-o's to get the junior enlisted to realize what this is. Otherwise, the 18 year old that does 4 years and gets out will...

V-22 Chosen to be the new COD

It'll take a shift of mindset in how the COD is used, not in tactics, but in keeping them on board. I've never seen a V-22 on a flight deck but I have to imagine it clobbers the hell out of it. Plus, only having 2-3 on a det that would more than likely have all of the aircraft on the beach...
