USN ACCP Bonus - voluntary paybacks & MSR waivers

You would if you wanted to redesignate into another community as you aren't beholden to the commitment from the bonus. As for aviation jobs, perhaps, just depends on how hard up the detailer is for bodies in billets.

The irony of that is that you're technically supposed to give the organizational set back and then go buy your own pair.

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

For the sake of argument, I wonder if 201 made it into combat first or if HCS-4 or HCS-5 did. All three mobilized right around the same time.

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

We may be saying the same thing, but differently. I took your initial post as meaning the best mission leads are those that have tactical knowledge but are better airspace/aircraft managers than tactical gurus, but I think we have actually agreed.

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

Because a non-tactical pilot with good cockpit management can herd cats, but a non-tactical pilot isn't going to understand the nuances of what a GBU-38 can do vs a GBU54v5, can I plug airframe x into slot y and still achieve effects required by the GFC, run a PR, do a full DAS push, etc, etc...

Not gonna lie, this is probably the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

It's interesting you ask this now as I just spent a better part of a day perusing through FLTMPS on squadron billets (don't ask why). I can honestly say that I saw a lot of white space in VFA squadrons that I didn't see in helo and maritime squadrons.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

My gap was pretty large. I commissioned in 2005 and did a year at grad school immediately afterwards. Combined with my deployment boat (the Enterprise) having mechanical issues, I ended up not deploying until Jan 2011, so a little over 5.5 years from comissioning to deployment. Since then...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Minot AFB. B52 incident and accident, All aircrew safe.

I logged about 5 hours in a B-52 once. As a helo bubba seeing that 7 engine approach was interesting. The CRM wasn't anything abnormal, and they rolled back the opposing good engine to alleviate any adverse yaw. According to the aircraft commander, in real world emergency losing another engine...

    E, F and G grounded

So for those of us unfamiliar with jets, is the thought of explosive decompression akin to what happens if an astronaut hops out of a spacecraft without a spacesuit on, just to a lesser degree?

USMC ALMAR - USMC standardizes on Magpul PMAG

Better feed lips, the plastic is surprisingly durable and I've never seen them break. The old metal mags after a lot of use could bend which could cause mis-feed, especially at high rates of fire. You can load a full 30 rounds in a pmag, the old metal mags were actually only designed to hold...

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Nope, you're reading it correctly. The other awesome thing California does is if you don't register/title it in California at time of purchase, you are to physically remove it from the state within 24 hours of purchase until it is registered in whatever other state. If you don't they can fine...

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub52.pdf I'll let you read the fine print but here's the rule in California printed verbatim. "Please note: If at the time the contract to purchase the vehicle is made the service member arranges to take delivery of the vehicle in California, the service member will...

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Ok, I think I see the disconnect here. Example #1) I buy a car in California, I pay sales tax in California. I owe Florida zero tax. Example #2) I buy a car in a state that doesn't collect sales tax (I think Oregon is an example). I owe Florida zero tax. Example #3) I buy a car in...
  19. insanebikerboy

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Again, not quite. Quoted directly from the Florida sales tax form, I recognize that I owe tax to the state in which the motor vehicle was purchased, unless a specific exemption applies. I do not intend to avoid sales or use tax in any state by registering the vehicle/vessel in Florida...
  20. insanebikerboy

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Not quite. You pay sales tax where you bought it, just not to Florida. If you somehow convince the seller to not charge sales tax and also don't pay sales tax to Florida, that's considered fraud and brings some serious monetary penalties.

USAA vs. NFCU: VA Loan, post-housing bubble Edition

What I'm enjoying right now, I live in base housing and I average 1-2 letters a week from a lender asking if I want to refinance my VA loan, on the house I live in, on base, owned by the government. Still haven't figured that one out yet.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

We use Samsung tablets loaded with Avare, a program pretty close to Foreflight, for national airspace stuff. There are various DoD programs available that can load imagery, GOS/GRG, etc, that we also use. I'd hazard to guess that we fly with them almost 100% of the time, save for flights like...

NEWS Navy to end ending all enlisted ratings!

This change is bullshit, plain and simple. It's change for changes sake. If there are good reasons for this, I've yet to hear them. The rollout was horrendous, "surprise!", which only hurts any potentially beneficial aspects. It removes individual identity from the sailor, and it removes a...

My info is somewhat dated but in my specific case my BKL length was about a 1/4 inch too long for certain platforms. Charlotte flyover costs AF pilots

A good example of why it's great to be a helo doing a flyover. The direct quote from the FAA guy when I did a flyover of an Eagles game in 2011, "I don't care how low you go, just don't hit anything". Needless to say, we were looking up at the top of the stadium when we were at the 50 yard line.

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

I'll use myself as an example. By the time I leave my current orders, I'll have been on sea duty for 12 years straight (all flying tours), and I've been deployed for almost 6 of those years (not counting workups, conus dets, etc). If I had been required to go to a boat for the "traditional"...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

I know several guys that have screened for deep draft command/nuke pipeline and none of them did the "boat tour" disassociated. I'm sure they are out there, but I'd be surprised if they are the norm vice the anomaly.

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

One thing that I think is being unwittingly left out of this conversation is the competency of the pilot who flies all the time versus a pilot who hasn't. I've never been on a shore tour since flight school and I'm an O-4 in my DH tour. Having not left the cockpit yet, I've flown with brand new...

I had dual citizenship when I enlisted and since the program I had enlisted into required a security clearance, I was required to renounce my other citizenship and even signed a form saying so. I would be surprised if that has changed.

    Hobbies

I get that rules are different for winged and non-winged. That said, a dude dies, a dude loses organs and can't fly, and a dude is down for a year. Each one of those could just as easily happen after winging as prior to, and the end result is the same for all three. My point, saying you're...

    AH-1W (Turkey) shootdown

Be a lot cooler if we already had it. I know for a fact it's been a bitch for awhile about why NAVAIR can pump a lot of money into certain programs but leaves low hanging fruit such as upgraded ASE to fester on the vine. The stuff that is supposedly coming should've been fielded by now. With...

    Hobbies

Wouldn't a "not in the line of duty" determination mean that he did something against the rules. For example, a dude wrecks a motorcycle but hasn't done any of the basic rider courses, etc, then that can be considered not in the line of duty. In lieu of there being an official order saying "no...
