Quick Show of Hands for us SNA selects yet to go to Primary

I hope we get a good sample size in the end. I'm surprised to see that so far the majority are guys like me--people with no flight time. Here's to hoping we don't get halfway through flight school and then realize we hate to fly! :icon_zbee

Went flying for the first time today!

Holy smokes.:D That trumps my story big time.

Quick Show of Hands for us SNA selects yet to go to Primary

I've read the debates about that on here and they're never-ending. I posted this out of curiosity to see how many people there are like me who are trying to make a career out of something they've never really done before. I flew twice to see if I'd like it and it was a blast.

Quick Show of Hands for us SNA selects yet to go to Primary

Is 25 hours an arbitrary #, or is that just the right amount of time you need to solo and get a private pilot's license?

Quick Show of Hands for us SNA selects yet to go to Primary

For all of us who are either final select SNA or pro rec'd--Joboy, Tom, etc.: will you have any flight experience going into primary? I have only about an hour, so I'm saying no for myself.

Went flying for the first time today!

When I took my first flying lesson, it was with this old guy. Before we taxied, he realized at the last second that he had forgotten to untie the plane from the ground. Then after we landed and we were taxiing back in, our left wing tip collided with another plane and he busted a light. That...

    Motivational Statement MEGA Thread

You're a good writer, man. In my brief scan, I found no typos or anything like that. Here is my #1 problem with the essays on here that often get posted: there is very little concrete information in most of the writing that people post. Nobody likes to read something like "I am a...

Power, wave off, abort, $#%$, Eject!

And they just aim it right up the proper glidepath, eh? Interesting. A few years ago before I started reading about this stuff, I figured that the pilots just zinged it at the runway and hoped for the best. I had no idea about the meatball, the LSO, or that camera. What a fool I was:D
  9. CaptainRon

Power, wave off, abort, $#%$, Eject!

Quick question. Is that camera that the LSO used in this video, mounted right on the deck exactly where the pilot should land if he hits the third wire? That would be my guess where it would be planted so they'd know if the pilot flew the ball perfectly, but it also sounds like if they put it...

Best way to build up push ups

Three sets a day of maxing out never worked for me. It did not improve my #. What did work was an exercise somebody on here suggested: take a deck of cards and flip them over one by one. Each time you flip one over, do that number of push ups. Ace = 1 (or 14 if you're a maniac) and King =...

    Leaving the USA...

Well, good news boys. I got on the horn with somebody at the NRD and it sounds like I'm not kicked out. Looks like we'll have an opportunity to be working together down the line afterall.:icon_boxi

    Leaving the USA...

My recruiter did mention something about blacklisted countries such as that. I assumed he was talking about our friends such as Iran, North Korea, etc. The place I went to was loaded with American tourists, so I'm hoping it won't be a problem.

    Leaving the USA...

Thanks guys. And thanks RHPF, I hope it is just a slap on the wrist. I'm a little nervous about this because I'm obviously new to the Navy and I don't know how they handle this sort of thing. I'm hoping if I do have to see a board about it they'll listen to my story and know it wasn't in ill...

    Leaving the USA...

It was an honest mistake. When I was over there I thought of it and knew I would have to inform them at a monthly meeting when I returned. Each month in BDCP we have a meeting to ask about doctor's visits, drugs, and I remembered they ask about trips out of the country also.

    Leaving the USA...

I just got a message from my NRD because I left the country on spring break and forgot to inform them. It was a stupid mistake, but I'm still new to this whole military thing. I didn't do drugs or anything else illegal abroad. Has this caused anybody trouble in the past? Please PM me if you can.

    Advice/Help

You mean you never even tried them? I tried pretty much every sport and sucked at just about all of them except for baseball...and then I quit all real sports at age 14. Hockey was a blast, but it's too bad I was slips McGee on a pair of skates. I could have done better on a wheelchair out...

    Advice/Help

Don't worry about the athletic factor man. On my application, the noteworthy athletic parts included "Downhill Ski Team Captain in High School" and "Co-ed Intramural Softball in College." So, even a disaster of an athlete like me can slip through the radar.

Surgery Before OCS...is the date flexible?

Tiz, I doubt I could do that because last year I had the surgery on my right hand and I had to wear a brace for a while. Who knows if the brace was really necessary or if the guy was just being on the safe side. He also had me taking percosetts, so apparently the wrist can be a little banged...

Surgery Before OCS...is the date flexible?

Yikes!:D But to be serious, it's actually happened on both wrists. I already had the right one operated on.
  25. CaptainRon

Surgery Before OCS...is the date flexible?

I ask this question because my recruiter doesn't seem to know much about it. I may or may not end up getting my left wrist operated on. Depending on when the surgery happens (if it does), it could screw up my ability to get in shape before OCS because I won't be able to do push ups again until...

Quick Question About Getting a Gun License

Thanks guys. And you're right scoober; I'd definitely take the class for my own safety and those around me. I wouldn't be getting it in MA, though. At the earliest it would be in Florida later this year. Who knows, maybe I'll be taking part in these firearms threads down the line.

Quick Question About Getting a Gun License

This is coming from somebody who's from Massachusetts, so forgive my cluelessness. Just like many of you guys, I've always been interested in guns, but I grew up in an area that doesn't have much acceptance for them. Once I'm active duty, will the military involvement make it easier to get a...

Fight's On! The origins of TOPGUN and dogfights back in the day/future prospects

I also would like to see that. I bet they'll do it eventually. Since it was so brief, maybe they'd have a hard time making a full episode out of it. There were two Gulf of Sidra incidents so they'd probably string them into the same episode. But yeah, I hope they do that too.

Advice on improving my odds of getting a pilot slot

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. My attitude towards it was the same that pre-med kids have with the MCAT and pre-law kids have with the LSAT. This is your career. Study long and hard for it.

    WWII Carrier Video

Awesome video. When that pilot at 4:27 lands, I get shivers, especially with the crank in the volume that happens right when he finally lands and survives. Pretty good! Prettyyyy prettyy prettyyyy pretty good! - Larry David

    Awkward Interservice Rivalry

I think you guys are right about this guy's character. One of the only things he said to me was that he starts trying to talk to girls at bars, and then he blows it because he thinks about all the guys he's killed. Terrific.

    Awkward Interservice Rivalry

I'm glad you commented on that, because I did not realize it was open to that interpretation. That's why I put "in" in quotation marks. I've never said I have done anything to anybody. It's been my friends who have said it (without my asking them to do it). And many times that they have, it...

    Awkward Interservice Rivalry

I'm in the same boat. I hate causing shit. I don't say anything to random guys at bars. It's only happened a few times when one of my friends has been like, "He's gonna be a Navy guy...etc." Then the typical insults arrive.
  41. CaptainRon

    Awkward Interservice Rivalry

Never happened to you before, Brett? I'll just be casually hanging out at a bar and this happens to me. I've only been "in" for about 2 months and it's already happened a few times.

    Awkward Interservice Rivalry

To be honest...I'm getting sick of this, but I understand why it happens. Tonight, for about the 4th time at a bar, I've been standing around, some guy has been hitting on one of my girl friends who's a total sketch ball, claiming to be in the Army or Marines. To relieve the awkwardness, my...

Computer Good Enough For Flight Simulator?

Thanks guys. I saw that Saitek X52 at Best Buy because it was the only joystick they had. The only thing that worries me about using the joystick to yaw, though, is that it sounds like it might develop bad habits for flight school. Anybody ever heard of somebody making stupid mistakes out...

    BDCP Pay

My program is called BDCP. Basically, you apply and swear into the Navy when you are in college. It's like ROTC, except you don't do too much when you're in college (just take 2 fitness tests per year, keep your grades above a 2.7, stay out of trouble, and keep in touch with the recruiter)...

    BDCP Pay

BDCP is an absolute steal. I just bought my dad a 65 dollar sweatshirt for Christmas and I got 13 dollars off just by flashing the Navy id. Excellent. To those who have been in for a while: how common is it for places to give a military discount?

I know a guy with stats just about identical to yours who got picked up for supply officer. Same undergrad GPA, same OAR, also prior enlisted, also **earned** some military awards. I forgot to add that he is older just like you too. I think he's about to turn 30 and he just got selected. I...

    BDCP Pay

Fancy? I think it looks a little ghetto. Big ole' sticker covering the front. Crappy hologram. I'm going to use this thing at the next bar I go to instead of my license to see if the bouncer thinks it's fake. Anybody had this happen to him/her?

    BDCP Weekly PT

I'm surprised there would even be enough people around anybody's area to do it . I don't know anybody near me who's in my same boat. Do you guys actually have other OCS guys/gals at your schools? There are maybe like 5 (?) ROTC people at my school, and I'm pretty certain I'm the only Navy...
