    NSS Facts

I can't necessarily confirm or deny. But it does seem like a lot of gradesheets in the HTs are all 4's and then maybe a below or above 'here and there' depending on if you sucked or blew their mind on that particular maneuver.

Surviving military aviation Chapter 1: What not to do

    Easy. Answer: The general public.

Moving Violation Ticket Court Date Hindering Application to OCS

First of all, it's not Basic. It's Officer Candidate School. Annoying little detail there. You're talking about winning a battle to lose the war. You're gonna go to court over some dumb technicality and risk your future career when you probably did exactly what he pulled you over for in the...

One method is to 'text' it to your email. Type your Email address in the "TO" line in your phone in lieu of a phone number. It'll send you an email from your phone.

    Physical Fitness

If all you do is prepare for the PRT, then you'll get destroyed at OCS. The PRT is pretty much the easiest PT you'll do there. Go do crossfit (scale down the workouts as necessary) and start running 2 miles a day, 3-4 times a week. As far as running goes, start with 15min timed runs (run...

    USAF F-16 Mask/Helmet

I was told by our PRs that, in an ejection seat A/C, the helmet wasn't allowed to have the elastic bands on the visor. Has to be the sliding down/tracked kind that locks in place. Is that BS or does the AF just allow their guys to do this on their helmets?

Do we have any say where we attend primary?

It's gonna end up being 1-1/2 years for me but same story. The only shitty part is having roommates who go elsewhere and having to move or find new roomies.

It should be the same. So, yes.

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

Rog. I've used foreflight and fltplan.com apps and everything shows up pretty well on there. You still have to zoom in places, but IMO it's no harder than squinting and holding a chart real close to your face.
  13. J

    Hornet down in VA Beach

Agreed. Idiots make for good entertainment. A solo jet coming back with 2 in the cockpit...umm...no.
  14. J

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

Could you clarify? I've used the charts on my Ipad (not in the plane, of course) but I've never really found myself zooming in any more than normal chart scale would've been. Thanks

Fltplan.com app does all the same shit....and it's free.
  16. J

Anybody in Vance AFB right now?

Short answer: It changes from week to week. The typical answer of 60% helos 20-30% props 10-20% jets holds true (around Whiting). But honestly, dont even think about that crap. That alligator is in Florida and, currently, your boat is in still in California. Worry about passing checkrides and...

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

I agree that durability would be the biggest issue, but with that said, wouldn't it still be cheaper to give out/fix tablets than pay for 10000's of copies of each PUB every 3-4 months? That's pretty much where my head was at on the matter.
  18. J

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

Wait until YOU have to start paying for those 1000's of copies of PUBS. Gets expensive quick which is why the civilian world has adopted them so willingly. No more paying $10/plate or chart every 3 months. Also, ever consider how many pubs it takes to fly long-distances? We did a CCX up to D.C...

    PRK 3 / 6 month reqs + healing timeline

The limit for astigmatism is 1.0 diopters so you're well within that. Not sure about the Cylinder limit, but it's in the waiver guide so check that out. The number 3.0 for Cylinder pops into my head so that may be it.

    Smartphones the norm?

Dude, quit being such a damn cheapass. Unless you owe the Russian Mob some money or something then get the damn phone. Buy an Ipad while you're at it. Between my DROID and my Ipad, I can pretty much study for a brief/flight, have the weather, file the flight plan, jam to some tunes, and have a...

    Pensacola Downtown?

Live in Perdido in a condo on the beach, then move up to Pace/Milton/Bagdad area to be closer to Whiting.

    Pensacola API/Primary living situation.

I dont know where you heard that from, but Governor's Gate has a 24 hour, on-call courtesy officer and this is by-far the quietest apartment complex I've ever lived in. I can't vouch for Eaton Square though.
  24. J

    Pensacola API/Primary living situation.

First off, you're married so he's definitely (well, as definite as anything is in the military) going to Whiting so I'd plan on that. The other concern is whether you guys want to live by NASP (in Perdido, on the beach) for API and then deal with moving or just get somewhere in the middle or in...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Helolumpy, I actually had the same question about the 60. One of our sim guys was saying that, in the 46, going into contingency power could very easily/quickly torch the engine. Is that the case with 60s?

This. Ask STUCON/flight lead/advisor. I heard a rumor that, as of 01JAN12, it could be put as a first choice on your dream sheet so look into that if you want it.

    OCS attrition

The problem with that is the fact that the lack of sleep and malnutrition at OCS probably contributed to his eyes being worse there than when he did the original physical which was my problem exactly. My eyes sucked during the indoc physical and the doc was talking about NPQ-ing me, but about 6...
  31. J

    OCS attrition

Oh yes..the "different pot of money" argument. Pretty sure we've heard this one before. What should matter is that it belongs the fucking NAVY. OR....we could just move OCS back to Pcola and solve the problem all together.
  32. J

    OCS attrition

They should be building an indoor track/workout facility. PT at that place blows in the winter. I got so sick of running laps in Nimitz hall and I didn't even have to do nearly as much as the other classes.
  33. J

    OCS attrition

The flight physical at OCS in Newport was a DQ-fest for the docs and I'm guessing it still is. My class only had a few guys get through scott-free and the other 10-12 of us aviation guys were stuck waiting on waivers forever. My PRK waiver didn't come in until literally 24hrs before I was...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

There's actually a post in another thread where MB discusses his experiences in each community and how many good/bad COs he had in each. My takeaway was that he's about 50/50 on the above question. He liked half of them. Other half, not so much.

PPL and how I get selected

I think you just answered your own question. To get definitive, experienced answers then you'd have to talk to someone who's sat in on a board recently and that's gonna be hard to come by. It doesn't hurt, but it ain't gonna make it for you either. It's just another thing that goes into the...

    NSS Facts

They'll start coming more often. They're hard to come by, but not impossible, in contacts. They do, however, exist. I think I ended up with numerous (10 or more) 5's in forms and had a ton of them in RIs/NAV/LL flights. Just keep working hard and killing it and you'll get them eventually. I...

NAVAL AVIATION What are the realistic requirements? Prior Service to Aviation..

If you want it, then don't dick around with "what are my chances" type of stuff or wondering and get on it. June isn't that far away. There's really no need to get your PPL unless you just want to. Take the ASTB and get to working on that package seeing as how they kinda take a while to get...

Repercussions of dropping PLC, and eligible to apply for NAVY,ANG while in PLC?

And ironically, by jumping ship, you're the one not doing what you're SWEARING you'll do. For the last time: if it isn't in writing, then you can bet your ass that you aren't getting it. And half the crap that you do get in writing isn't for sure. There' a long time before you even see an A/C...

    NSS Facts

I think you misunderstood me. I stopped worrying about my NSS long ago. It is what it is. I just find the way it's applied/ramifications and the math sort of interesting after having seen it in action.

Repercussions of dropping PLC, and eligible to apply for NAVY,ANG while in PLC?

The other thread that you already replied to pretty much answered the question for you. Secondly, NFOs are not "backup QBs" to a pilot. There's a legitimate reason that two seats are better than one. If you're in AFROTC, then that staying there is your best option of becoming a pilot. You can...

  44. J

    NSS Facts

Soo...if the two programs and A/C are different..who's to say that a T34 student was a 45 NSS kinda guy wouldn't be a 55 NSS kinda guy in T6s or vice versa? For worse or for better and all else equal, putting two identical students through two different programs will inevitably end in two...

    NSS Facts

You're right. I should've phrased that a little differently. That's exactly what I was trying to get at with the whole "single-seat mentality" thing. Ok. I didn't say you didn't know about CRM. I said you hadn't seen how it is actively emphasized in Helo-land or P3-land vice the primary-land...

Minority w/ 300 PFT Air Contract

Yeah, but the Navy and Marine Corps has plenty of skinny white guys so I'm sure my picture would get lost in the sauce. ;)
  47. J

    NSS Facts

I'm done with it. Are you still in contacts or what? I got that thing up to 240+ every time I flew it after my C4390 (including RIs and most of forms). The reason people argue that it's a more jet-geared trainer is because you wear a g-suit, 02 mask (at all times), and all the other jet gear...

Minority w/ 300 PFT Air Contract

Sea Daddy? Really? I googled that and got nothing. WTF? This whole thread makes me laugh and depresses me at the same time. I wish they'd just take that whole "what color are you" section off of the application. Who cares? Can you run fast enough, fly airplanes, and kill bad guys? Rog. You're in.
  49. J

    NSS Facts

You pretty much just figured out exactly how the NSS works. I'm aware of that. I was simply referring to the fact that what you've pointed out doesn't exactly make a 'T34 NSS' vs. 'T6B NSS' an "all else equal" situation when it comes time to selecting jets (which, if we're all honest, is...
