    Good food/booze in PCola?

Okay, since we had a cooking thread, I think I can ask this without too many questions about how wide a stance I take. Where do you all shop for food in P-Cola? Is there a Whole Foods-ish store in the area? Failing that, where can I get imported beer? There's two decent Vietnamese shops on...

Contractors getting own Air Forces ??

Link to Janes article JDW - Blackwater seeks to acquire Super Tucano Dunno if it's subscription only or if it's just because I'm accessing it via my university (yes, I'm on leave and in a library...I'm a dork, I know it). Interesting tidbit: the DoD has rented 6 OV-1's, but is not saying...

Contractors getting own Air Forces ??

http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/08/blackwater-buys.html According to janes (can't copy paste), they're acquiring one for training purposes. I wouldn't necessarily blow this out of proportion, though it would be a real handy CAS platform.

Contractors getting own Air Forces ??

A light turboprop like the Tucano or an AT-6 is ideal for COIN, especially for local security forces that lack the logistical support for more complex aircraft like helicopters. They generally have longer loiter time, greater payload, and easier maintenance than a helicopter of comparable cost...

    Liberal Arts School?

Because in most fields, the quality of your undergraduate department doesn't mean shit so long it's reasonably good. It's grad school when you really need to start shopping. And since most schools highly encourage you to seek a graduate degree elsewhere for diversity of viewpoint (this is true...

Role of Navy in Iraq: IA

Where are you getting this info that the National Guard was not intended to deploy overseas? It's participated in every major war since its federalization as an army reserve in 1903. Perhaps if you trace back to colonial days, but what relevance does that have to today?
  24. mmx1

Role of Navy in Iraq: IA

TBS graduate, actually. I can understand an argument that it detracts from the health of the Navy or its readiness to perform its assigned roles. There's some of that sentiment within the Marine Corps about losing essential skillsets. I wouldn't even have a problem with him whining about IA...

    masters degree

This is where we differ. I think the implied assumption is that a M.S. is more of the same B.S., to excuse the pun. It isn't. The content of most liberal arts B.S/B.A programs is very abstract and generally not very applicable to any job. But in both disciplines I've experienced firsthand...

    masters degree

I don't believe I'm entitled to anything. I'm personally pursuing something I think is beneficial, regardless of whether the Marine Corps pays or endorses it. (And by pursuing, I mean doing it 8 years down the line). Since I think it is a valuable experience for officers, I wish the Corps would...

    masters degree

I want to win the long war so I can hang up the uniform, go home, and do ... whatever it is civilians do. That's my big picture/endstate/whatever. masters degree

I'm a bit frustrated by how the Marine Corps treats external PME. As far as I can tell, my next opportunity to get a resident Master's at a civilian institution is either a fellowship at the ILS level...or to get out at the end of my EOS, get my degree, and then come back in. I think the...

    Old TBS page

The schedule for major events like FEX's should be pretty much set by the beginning of the POI. Shortly after we picked up, the spouses received a pretty accurate calendar via the family rep, detailing the major events and particularly when we wouldn't be coming back for the night.

    Why are UH-1N's so underpowered?

I've been hearing a lot of talk about how underpowered the UH-1N is and how much crews are looking forward to the Yankee upgrade to restore the Huey to its former role as a true utility craft. One pilot told me that realistically it can only carry five personnel, crew included, and maintain a...

    The Tortured Lives of Interrogators

So because someone else is more evil than you makes it okay to be just a bit evil? Right is right and wrong is wrong. Chest-beating only clouds your judgement. The argument that deviating from what we did 50 years ago is a sign of weakness is complete bunk. 50 years ago we believed it was...

    Proverbial Grenade in the Punchbowl

I'm pointing out that the concept isn't so alien to the military. We certainly see fit to place officers in MOS's based (in part) on peer and subordinate evaluations, what is so different about the fleet that it couldn't work there? The concept of a 360-degree review is is fairly common in the...

    Proverbial Grenade in the Punchbowl

Why not? We use them here at TBS to help our SPC determine our rankings. Billet holders get evaluated by superiors and subordinates. I personally think this is more useful (and less divisive) than peer evals, but both are valuable tools.
