What do you think makes a "bad" leader?

(Bringing an old thread back to life) Came across this and thought you may get a chuckle. I love how folks who have never been in the military think leadership can be boiled down to a few pithy quotes... http://www.entrepreneur.com/slideshow/220667?cm_mmc=Market-_-Outbrain-_-NA-_-NA#10

40 days and 40 nights of flight school

It was standard in Navy that as soon as the promotion list came out you got frocked. This happened for every rank, including 1 stars. It was a good deal. You got to wear the higher rank but it didn't cost the Navy a dime. Then the other services complained about the practice so the Navy had to...

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

You are aware the HS squadrons are part of the CVW and HSL has traditionally not been part of the CVW, right? HS skippers get FitReps from CAG. HSL & HC got FitReps got FitReps from their Commodore Today CVW squadrons HS/HSC/HSM) get FitReps from CAG and the Expeditionary squadrons get...

    Navy Rescue Swimmer Rates

We have done it a few time in the last few years, but since isolating events are few and far between, it's a skill that we need to have but we fortunately have not had to execute much. I will say that we have conducted far more CSAR missions than we have "dropped torpedoes in anger" or have...

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

So then EVERY helo pilot CO has been lesser the quality than EVERY person selected for CAG for the last 20+ years? That is nowhere near a logical as the Navy leadership deciding that Helo guys are not eligible for CAG. Since I know of a bunch of HS bubbas that went on to wear a star and there...

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

I guess we'll just disagree. I know of a couple of HS skippers who lobbied pretty hard to be considered for CAG. In fact, one actaully sent a letter saying that if he didn't screen for CAG, he would retire. The Navy called his bluff and he did retire... I think many of the HS (now CVW-HSC)...

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

I'm sorry, but I don't see how sea time is relevant to a specific community being a CAG? Since the discussion is about if specific communities should be excluded from being selected as a CAG due to platform or mission, what does sea time have to do with anything? I doubt that a CAG gets more...
  15. helolumpy

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

Actually the Sea Combat Commander will be the supported commander for these missions. CAG will be a force provider to BZ for ASW and SUW, so while he will be involved in the discussion, CAG will not be the lead for either of these mission.

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

Gotta disagree with the thought as you state it. If you are talking about "levels of war" then I would agree. Since leaders at the Operational Level all succeeded at the Tactical Level, it makes sense. But your as I interpret your post, I have yet to meet many Navy TACAIR pilot who understands...

    Navy Rescue Swimmer Rates

There are two types of Rescue Swimmers. One is Surface Rescue Swimmer. You are a member of the ships crew in a "surface rating" and your ship sends you to Rescue Swimmer School. The other is Aviation Rescue Swimmer. All Aviation Rescue Swimmers are Naval Aircrewmen, therefore your rating...

The "who" was Naval Aviation leadership (Flag Officers). Brett touched on one of the big "whys". The other significant factor was to ensure that each community has a sufficient opportunity to play for Flag. Since HS guys (this was before the big helo train wreck... eer Helo Master Plan) were...
  19. helolumpy

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

The decision a few years ago was that Helo bubbas would not be considered for CAG. They promotion opportunity for flag was available through the deep draft pipeline, so the Helo guys had suffient opportunity to make Flag, so the CAG job would continue to be fixed wing only.
  20. helolumpy

So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

My info is a few years dated, but when the idea of a helo pilot becoming a CAG was brought up again (happens every 10 years or so) the word was that HS had the highest percentage of "nuke pipeline guys" of any community. You have to be a carrier aviator to be the CO of the carrier. Since the...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

When jets that used the bridle on carriers that did not have a bridle arrester (the little finger sticking off the bow of older carriers) the bridle would go flying forward over the bow and land in the water. IIRC both the T-2 and TA-4 both used bridles but the T-45 does not require it.

The demise of ASW skills in the Navy is horrible. It is a core mission area of Naval Warfare and our leadership only pays it lip service (at best). In the mid-90's my Dept Heads were all Cold Warriors who had countless hours working ASW problems with Soviet boats. I was taught ASW by...
