I knew 2 guys who were drafted during Maritime Advanced to go E-2/C-2. "Draft " being the key word since there was a need apparently. Nothing to count on.
Now, I'm just curious (not even considering a career with comm air), but do you actually have to get airborne to log "chock to chocks".
Example: Comm air starts up, taxis, aborts for downing gripe, taxi/tow back, shut down. Do guys actually log that?
A regular deployment these days involves the desert.
Per diem is less there. VP spends less time in the places that used to be known for more per diem. Make sense?
As far as P-3s providing more IAs, dunno where you came up with that.
Per diem these days is not what it used to be. As far as not going to sea, good chance you're gonna trade that for a stint in the desert. Keep that in mind.
No Brett, long story short, oversped prop into fails to feather into oil starvation/fire into 3 engine ditch. It's really is a well written book by a former VP-9 Skipper.
We flew our mids everyday, as much as they wanted to. How much flightime a Mid gets has way more to do with the squadron itself and their Mid training program (or lack thereof) vice the overall community.
You're kidding me right?
The only thing i would expect a Middie on cruise to know about a NATOPS is what it is. If he/she really wants to know what life is like, find a JO just to explain how the chapters are organized.
Memory items? Yeah. How to egress.
Ops limits? Not so much.
yeah, my advice is to talk to every IP you know. In person.
You'll get a hell of a lot more out of it than 3rd hand "there I was" gouge on here. There is no magic formula for any airframe.
Scan, scan, adjust, wait, scan, scan, adjust, wait, scan...
I lived in Honolulu, right downtown, for 3 years (minus 2 deployments). I was lucky, in that the traffic was always flowing opposite the direction I needed to go during the work week (Windward side-north commuters coming south on the Pali highway as I went north to K-Bay). If I got to work and...
A crisp hundo. Think of it as a gift certificate.
( a nice digital camera would also be cool, especially if it was ready to go for pics at the ceremony and after party)
For A to B repositioning flights, yes. PTAPTP all the way.
If there's something to be done tactically between A and B, you fly by the rules and file accordingly or as much as ops(EC) will permit.
The fun stuff comes when it's time to deal with customs on deck..."uh...yeah, we de-bugged...
Or you could offer a CWO transition to guys already qualified in these airframes. I know plenty of people who'd take the pay cut to stay in a flying gig. Already winged, proven, and experienced.
"But what about the cost for ACIP and flight pay?" - Fine, no ACCP and cap flight pay.
Yeah...
