switching from NROTC to other branch ROTC after contract..

Wish, how much experience do you have with NROTC? Do you know what the contract program entails? "Just have to pay the money back" Really? That's all? How about bringing it up with a class advisor? Getting a sponsor officer in the other service unit? Finding the proper instruction...

Snake, WishiCouldFly, he's talking about NROTC, which is a whole other animal. Possible, but unlikely.

Eric Cooper: Navy SEAL, F-14 pilot, POSER Bigamist

Not so much a disagreement as a different perspective: I dunno, I think the humility and sense of humor shown by 99% of aviation types (and most military personnel in general) is a huge asset and an admirable trait. Approachability, being open to and professional about critique, a...

    Airwarriors Stickers?

Phrog is 100% right. I also had the "joy" of this type of stuff in my last 2 squadrons and people getting wrapped up in design options, combined with the inevitable flakeouts made it miserable. One test run, with one design, to see if the "system" works is the most anyone can ask for...

    P3 vs P8 Question

I meant no more cathode ray scopes. I know no one is building racks from fiber composite.

    P3 vs P8 Question

That's a major deceleration. Remember, that torp still has to be able to do some work after submerging. Not impossible, though. You're also looking at time critical placement. More time in the air = more time for the target to disappear.
  18. zab1001

    P3 vs P8 Question

A torp weighs about 500 pounds. As far as the altitude, you either misjudged it, or that was some kind of demo. Min alt for P-3 is 200 feet. I'd wager they're using the lightest stuff they can afford, since weight is one of the primary issues with the program. I'm sure something is...

    P3 vs P8 Question

Was the "50 foot off the water" footage real or computer generated? Anyway...I dunno what a standard 737 cargo weighs, but I'd bet it's comprable to 4 torps and some DCs. Depth charges...hahahahahahaha....that's pretty funny.... Supposedly the hit on gas onstation will be made up for...

    E-2/C-2 pipeline

Meanwhile, for Rq9, transitioning out of VP isn't very common. By "isn't very common" I mean that in 7 years I never heard of it panning out for anyone, people I knew or even through the grapevine. Look at it this way, play your cards right and you might get some P-8.

    Navy Pilot Flying C-17's

Dunno about other AORs, but my last (luckily just before out the door, it worked out well for me - "Way to go to work buddy") "real" FITREP was competitive. The Admiral in charge of NAVSOUTH was tired of "people using foreign tours as a ticket out". For reference, we were all ranked against...

    Navy Pilot Flying C-17's

right edit: Point being, you need SOME kind of common background to make the exchange viable. Jet to jet makes sense (even different platforms). Jet to helo, not so much. Pretty much anything except VR C-130 to C-17? Even that's a major stretch. This guy said he's a Navy guy. Unless...

    Navy Pilot Flying C-17's

Funny thing is, I know someone who did get to fly USAF C-17s. Not exactly in the capacity sm13464 is describing, but it happened. Regardless, I'm curious what the definition of "coming close to the end of my sea tour" is in terms of months from PRD. Did you come up with this idea yourself, or...

    Carrier/Maritime selection

All the folks I know who got freebie rides in the 737 P-8 Propaganda Tour went low. Until somebody figures out how to lay a buoy field with any degree of accuracy from high altitude (which doesn't cost a bazzillion per buoy), you have to drop down.
  36. zab1001

    Carrier/Maritime selection

Yeah, anyway...is that squadron policy or an actual NATOPS change?
  37. zab1001

    Carrier/Maritime selection

I know you don't really think EVERYONE is locked in to move to the P-8. Plenty of you new guys will have a good chance of flying the Orion until they retire. It's 200', if not, feel free to rag on your pilots.

Them's the breaks. You'll get some good info on here, but your best bet is to bend the ear of every instructor in advanced, VP and VQ. Ask them what missions they loved, and what they hated. No one is going to be able to tell you the about the sensitive "cool" stuff over the net. You...
