    Service member being an idiot

Spoken like someone who has never been stationed on Okinawa/knew someone stationed there. Zero Alcohol for a year? Child's play compared to what I've heard from my buddies on Okinawa. The problem is not that these things happen, and the military responds - it's that the Japanese don't want...

    Budget Cuts and Flight/Simulator Training

It's a good thing that the airlines who have been flying the 737 for oh, about 40+ years aren't nervous ninnies... I agree with 90% of your points, especially since my civilian job is in modeling & simulation (but more on the operator side of it), however I would like to make a few points...

What is the role of fixed-wing aircraft in the Coast Guard?

At least you've made the statement with a least some modicum of experience/understanding. I will say this - military flying is WORLDS different than civilian flying, and if I were you - I'd go into it with an open mind, because there is a fair chance that you'll like it more than you think.

That's all that really matters these days.

GoPro and other cams in flight

I used to use Adobe Premier, but the version I have is very old and doesn't play well with Windows 7. I am a huge fan of open source for a myriad of reasons and started looking for something new. I found a product called Lightworks that I'm very happy with, the learning curve is steep - but...

    Budget Cuts and Flight/Simulator Training

That's where the future is. The biggest complaint of our simulator (the MSAT, and the Marine funded SAVT) is that it doesn't respond to rapidly changing TTPs among aircrew so the aircraft profiles we have are the aircraft profiles we have. We've received funding to upgrade our system to be a...

    Farting in Church

Ummm, pretty sure that airline pilots are hourly employees. The bulk of their pay comes from those 10 hours out of 72.

I usually go with "ORM Issues? No big deal, just sit on your hands and tune the radios - and don't touch the fucking radios." Yours works too.

    Et Tu, Petraeus?

It was suggested by one of the Navy guys that I work with that Kevin Bacon may just be the lynchpin in all of this. After doing some research, I think he was right... Example: I was an uncredited CH-46E pilot in Battle Los Angeles with Kurt Deville Kurt Deville was in Super with Kevin Bacon...

The Neverending Callsign thread (Best/Worst/Funniest and where they came from)

Not always. When I left active duty (and before I joined the reserves, aka a honest-by-god civilian), I wanted to be the best, most supportive spouse I could be. I looked into participating in the Spouses club at my wife's command in Maryland... Until I found out that at Fort Meade (the base...

    The interesting world of VQ

Honestly, the only things that we have that they couldn't replicate in some manner is the AAV and the LAV. I would argue our amphibious/expeditionary capabilities are 90% doctrine and training and 10% equipment. Look at a traditional amphibious assault. How would we do it? AAVs, LCUs, and...

    Gun for a gift?

Private transfers between individuals (that are both Virginia residents) is legal in Virginia, no FFL required. If he is a NC resident, and she is VA - then they would have to go to a local FFL to transfer it. AND, it would have to be done in the state she is a resident of (or a state that she...

I've only had their Chardonnay... Not really a huge wine drinker - so I'll get something that's drinkable and cheap when needed... Although my wife I and did use to attend the weekly wine tastings at our favorite liquor store when we lived in MD. It's why we have so many bottles of top-shelf...

Can't lie, Charles Shaw is a pretty good wine for the price... As you pointed out - inflation is a bitch... Two buck chuck became 3 buck chuck, and is currently 4 buck chuck (it's $3.99 in the local Trader Joe's)

    Marine Corps Birthday

No drunk posting from me last night :( Live fire at Lejeune was a bit rough this time around (40 degrees and raining, and the air showed up so I had to stand out in it), and I was exhausted. Left Lejeune on Friday, and ball on Saturday. Was in bed by 10:30 after the ball because I was...

    Et Tu, Petraeus?

What MB said, with an addition and clarification. Reservists are also subject to the UCMJ while drilling. Mishandling classified info would be covered in other federal laws (not the UCMJ) if we're not in a drilling/orders/mobilization status. Think of it this way: If you aren't paying me...

    On Warfighting: The Warrior Spirit

In a short answer, yes. We do. And it works fine. The longer answer - our MOS system is more akin to your NECs. So while you may have an AT that has a specific NEC - and they can be detailed to any job requiring an AT, the primary MOS of a Marine could be 6322 - "Aircraft...

    Correspondence Course Review

I don't remember how many points it is (I want to say it's like 5), but math for Marines is well worth the time and effort expended for reserve retirement. Only problem - it requires a proctor for the test. Why is it worth it? It doesn't make you go through the class, you can just take the...

    Anyone on IRR

Yep. On Active Duty, you juggle your military career and your family. SELRES/SMCR have to juggle a civilian career, a military career, and your family. From personal experience - sometimes it can be a bigger pain in the ass than AD.

I don't know about Navy SelRes, but I'd argue that things seem to be changing on the green side of the Reserves. Since there is clearly a shift from a strategic reserve to an operational one, more and more of the no-loads are being shed in order to make room for those that are willing and able...
