Marine Jets: The Good, Bad, and Ugly.

Holy shit brother, you typed what I was thinking (only more eloquently, since I'm too busy moving my house to think). This is the EXACT same argument we had with two MAWTS instructors about HLL/LLL and refreshing. Which led to one MAWTS guy saying "Fucking Reservists" as he walked away. Never...

NPQ for aviation. What other designator should I choose?

IW is hardly still defining its role in the Navy. IW used to be Cryptologist. It's been around for a while. Where are you stationed? PSW (my wife) is a former SWO, who lat moved to IW. She could probably address some of your concerns/questions about both communities. Are you saying that...

Macbook Air versus Pro - Thoughts?

Actually, if you want to be technically accurate - StarDivision (a German company) are the ones that created it in 1984. Sun Microsystems bought StarDivision in 1999.

Macbook Air versus Pro - Thoughts?

I don't understand exactly what you're saying about "former Sun Microsystems". It's confusing - call a spade a spade. Sun Microsystems was purchased by Oracle, who continued to develop OpenOffice. Oracle recently donated OpenOffice to Apache, who continues to develop/maintain OpenOffice. You...

    Retired senior officers cashing in

Funny thing is, I found myself doing this exact thing... As a former Capt (NOT GO), making a whole shitload less money. Morals, ethics, core values? They don't increase over time and rank. You have them or you don't. As evidenced by several GOs who demonstrated their wholesale lack thereof...

Feinstein to introduce AWB in January

Cabela's has some in stock. If you ever have trouble finding some, use ammoseek.com. It'll search all in-stock stuff and sort by price per round. Looks like the cheapest (non-tracer) is now $0.60/round. Last week is was ~$0.30/round. Now, truth be told - that was Wolf/Tulammo - but good...

    Roommate wanted in Norfolk

There was an article in the Virginian Pilot a couple months back that indicated that Hampton Roads was the most dangerous for traffic in all of Virginia. Something like every 15 minutes there's an accident, and every other day someone dies on the roads here.

GoPro and other cams in flight

I'm guessing you haven't seen the MARADMIN... Unit sweeps (breathalyzers) twice a CY, random breathalyzers every other month. Similar to urinalysis. Blow a .01 and get assigned to alcohol dependency screening. Special trust and confidence is alive and well... Sent from my iPad using...

GoPro and other cams in flight

As a dude who is an ASO and has sat on an AMB (MIB doesn't exist anymore) before, I'd want to see the footage - but if you're suggesting it would be brought up as a causal factor? It might be - but it would likely be rejected.

GoPro and other cams in flight

If it's the one that I've seen on their website - that's for the ground side NVG mount. Doesn't work with the ones on our helmets. If it's different than the one on the website, then that's pretty sweet!

GoPro and other cams in flight

I got a NRFI NVG Mount from flight E, and turned it into a helmet mount for my GoPro. All I had to do was unscrew 4 screws, the entire adjustment block came off and then I used the curved adhesive mount. Flight E actually gave me two, so if you PM me your address I'll send you the other one.

    Hello world

If that's the case, contact webmaster or gatordev to lock/disable your original username. Or lock/disable your new username. Only one username per person on this board. What you did/said with your current one is not horrible enough to require a new username. Trust me. We've seen much worse.

Not true. Forget the username on here, but he was Iranian born and is a naturalized US Citizen. Did everything in his power to renounce, and Iran refused. He documented everything, and now he's flying jets I believe... I'll did around and find his thread because he detailed what was required...

    USCG to USMC questions

First and foremost... Did you speak to a RECRUITER, or an Officer Selection Officer? Did you fill out the request information page on marineofficer.com? The reason I ask is that the USMC recruits officers differently than the USCG (I have experience with both, ended up turning down an...

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

I'd actually put those numbers higher, probably 75% know what a ZSU 23-4 is, 99.9% of WTIs do, and I'd say 75% of WTIs could tell you characteristics/threat reactions. Actually being proficient at the threat reaction (GTR/EW and non EW)? Those are not as high. There's only so much training...

Were you asking a boot 1stLt? Or were you asking the low-hanging fruit that was probably on his way out the door for a FAC tour? I don't know anyone in the assault support community that would think that a ZSU 23-4 was a FRIENDLY weapons system... Well, that is except for the afforementioned...

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

I'm not telling you about your airframe. I'm just arguing that strapping another piece of equipment on an aircraft with no ordnance to train with isn't going to magically solve your problem. I MIGHT know a thing or two about training, and managing a squadron's training program. It's amazing...

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

I figured as much, but I was just using it as an example of crew served weapons vs. moving boat. In case Otto thought that crew served weapons vs. moving land target was that much different. My point was mainly that there is no magical cure-all weapon that will take out a small boat without...
  44. P

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

Umm, yeah. You do. Your aircraft has the HF, plus crew served weapons. The UH-1N/Y has 2.75" rockets and crew served weapons. And they're pretty damn good at shooting, to include moving targets. And the USCG saw a lot of success shooting moving boats with the introduction of the HITRON...

NAS Whiting field vs NAS Corpus Christi

I wanted Whiting for one reason. I had a horrible move down to P-Cola, didn't want to repeat it any time soon, and was leaning towards helos. I pitched it to student control that if there was a slot for a single guy at Whiting, I was leaning towards helos and could save the government some...

    Budget Cuts and Flight/Simulator Training

Yup, that would be it. Pretty amazing game engine, as you mentioned - and very good for infantry squad level tactics. For what we train for, it's not as good. The DVTE system is better for what we do, but not as good for infantry squad level tactics. MARCORSYSCOM is looking to fund one or...

    Service member being an idiot

Not what I'm saying. A squadron "transiting" 6th Fleet AOR is different then a guy who has 3 year orders to the same place. It is also different when you have a minor ARI in 6th Fleet and you have a minor ARI in Okinawa. Even the most minor ARI results in full blown lockdown on occasion...
