    F-35C in Catapult Hookup Tests

One thing I could never figure out is why is the probe fixed on the A-6, EA-6? When I first 'noticed' it this year, I was with some other Hornet/Rhino dudes and we assumed it must have some way to retract as it's clearly in the way. Apparently, not...

    Hornet down near Lemoore

http://online.wsj.com/article/AP4b81b11eea6a43f1b2b9667fdc884bca.html The names have been released. It is a huge bummer for me. I had the honor of flying with and working with 11 quite a lot. He cared a ton about the Navy, the squadron, and our class. Truly great guy, and will be missed in the...

Air France 447 crash.....possibly found after 2 years

I read that they focused the search too far away, covering a huge part of the ocean... just not the right part. Also, the article I read said that it was where an oil slick was spotted from satellite immediately after the crash.

    This really happened

For full disclosure, I didn't say he is still progressing in the RAG. Merely that he didn't fail out. Read between the lines as required. In general I think he is a good dude, so I don't plan to talk shit on him. He has gotten a ton of crap for it, and is on an IA currently.

    This really happened

The same photographer came to visit NAS Meridian last year. The photos he took there were also pretty awesome in apperance. Having little photography skill myself, I am at least impressed by the work this guy does. One correction is that the student did not fail out of the RAG.

    100 years of political correctness

I got this sent to me by a retired Marine Col. (F-4 Phantom guy). I elected not to forward this on since I could only imagine what my chain of command would do to me. Needless to say there was a lot of Vietnam/Korea era pilots who were very upset on the chain of emails regarding the website.

    Super Duper Hornet Walkaround

The narrower opening produces a higher velocity air flow, but the fuel flow is constant (same as idle). The Rhino cannot do this since advancing the throttle programs in more fuel. At least this is what is taught (only a A-D dude though). It obviously doesn't 'create' fuel, but if the fuel flow...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Of note, the DOD has said it neither needs, nor wants the second engine, the F136. Things like cutting the procurement by $1B, but adding $500M for second engine funding (both against DOD request) to appease Congressional employers drives me nuts. It's the same with the earmark business. We...

    Army/Navy Game 2010

I remember reading some Adm said that this rule just creates the atmosphere of, not if, but by how much you will break the rule. 1000' /250 kts is boring. I really hope they go to 500'/300 kts as a happy medium. Or hell, anything better than 1000'/250. If you can do it in a King Air, it isn't...

    F-35 Question

Also, from previous discussions on here from years ago, regarding I think it was the Raptor... The first pilots will transition as more senior guys, and they generally will work towards the more junior guys down to Cat 1 (no previous airframe) over time.

    JFCOM getting whacked???

I think most GS jobs, give credit for prior military service (towards your GS retirement) but if you didn't serve long enough to get your military retirement that is all you get. What I am wondering is if you can double dip those years? If you did a full (all AD, or split with reserve) 20, can...

    Ability to reassign?

It's all timing based. When I showed up for API they were letting people switch if they had all the requirements for pilot. It lasted a short while. Most people have to put in for a board to select them for it. All of the one's I have seen have been O-3s, just after their first fleet tour. They...

The Air Boss wings his son...4th generation of naval aviators from one family

If they weren't gifted, nor family, I personally wouldn't ever wear them. As for Tom, he's a good dude. I had heard stories from people of McCain's era who said McCain was a bit of a handful when he went through training. You would never know who Tom's Dad is, and I never saw him pull that card.

USS George H W Bush CQ Det June 2010

Great pictures, but someone really needs to tell the MC3 to work on those captions. A's on tail = Meridian. It could be either VT-7 or VT-9. We share the jets so you can't tell from the photo. We only have T-45Cs. B's on tail = Kingsville. They have some T-45As, the rest are Cs.

Probably a good thing to find something for all of that uneducated/unskilled labor to do, other than grow opium. Not to mention, Russia is pissed at us over the heroin intake (blaming us for not constraining Afghans production). Of course, I remember reading that some Coalition leader ~2002...

T-6B Texan II enters service at NAS Whiting

Well you can't 'control' them persay from inside the cockpit. The inner doors open to allow the gear to drop, then retract closed (as discussed above). The cycle reverses for the gear to go up. As for 'controlling' them, if you pull the emergency gear door handle the inner doors will stay open...

T-6B Texan II enters service at NAS Whiting

K'ville only (emergency gear handle, right?). Meridian either wipes out (to check for hyd 1/2 hardover and counter flow or whatever on hyd 2), or does nothing w/r/t hyds (which we were told not to do anymore). Still if the jet hasn't flown in a bit (or if the maintainers drop them) gravity...

T-6B Texan II enters service at NAS Whiting

The hyds bled down from the engine being off for long enough and gravity took over. *Again assuming it works the same way as a T-45.

How you can tell that photo is old, is not from the attire, or the grainy image... not even the faded colors.... Notice the thin, attractive stewardesses (not gender neutral flight assistants or whatever pc term they have now)? That's how.

    Which watch?

The google search returned a retail price of $4200 in Feb 2008 for ALT1-Z. Given the annual/semi-annual price increase that most of these watches have it is probably closer to $4.5-7 now. Edit: I misjudged the inflation rate. As of April 2010: "Retail $5,250 (leather), $5,880 (bracelet)"

FAA Mandates ADS-B to replace transponders by 2020

Not that I am for it, but they (Fed Gov) also did it for people 'needing' HDTV antennas when the analog signals stopped. I think the ADS-B falls more inline with that perhaps.

    BMW military sales

Without dragging everyone through all the details: I had a brand new (at the time) 2007 BMW and had issues with it. There were >5 dealerships in the area, but all refused to issue a loaner car since I bought it elsewhere. Eventually, the electrical problem got so bad I couldn't shut the car off...

    BMW military sales

Just a heads up to perspective BMW owners... Their whole loaner/rental program policy for warranty repairs and/or maintenance is specified by each dealership independently. What that means, if you buy the car from Dealer X, they will almost always give you a loaner if your car just flat out...

    Which watch?

Uhh... Unless I am missing something, the Airwolf (not just the pictured one, any Airwolf) does NOT have a 'sweep second hand'. It's a quartz watch, so the second hand ticks like a quartz watch, rather than sweeps like a mechanical.
  42. R

    Which watch?

Well I think it was something like ~130 for the band, and 400 for the stainless clasp. They are sold separately, but if you didn't own the rubber band before, you'd need both I believe. Again, these prices could be wrong... check with the local dealer if it's something that you are interested in...

    Which watch?

You might be it dude. I've heard lots of comments good and bad about that watch, and other watches like it... The design of the '6' hasn't been a critique I've heard before. Have you seen the watch in person out of curiosity?
  44. R

    Which watch?

I also own a blue faced Airwolf. It's a nice watch, but I definitely like the Raven version better. I saw an Airwolf for the Reno Air Races that had the black rubberized bezel (like the Raven) on it. Very cool design provided it holds up. Hard to tell in the picture, but the buttons on the side...

    New Strategic Arm Reduction Treaty?

The new treaty would reduce the nuclear weapons levels from 2,200 currently allowed, down to 1,550. I would venture a guess that 1,550 is more than sufficient to survive and respond in turn. I am not advocating against the MADD concept, just saying we over built and it is currently a waste of...

Story: Pilots grounded for good after low flyover

    New Strategic Arm Reduction Treaty?

I used to have that same opinion. Now, I honestly think DOD budget cuts are going to continue, and given the amount of money spent on that (Nuclear launchers/weapons), it seems like a good place to start. Of course, we can't reduce our capability, if they don't. The fact that we are going to do...
