It doesn't. You have to compete for a spot at flight school if you go ROTC. The only way to get a guaranteed flight slot with the USMC is to go to PLC or OCC. The Navy has BDCP as well as OCS that can guarantee you a slot in Pensacola.

Does the U2 have a yaw string? I fight that is probably the most important instrument on a sailplane, with maybe a variometer in at a close second.

Tanks are uber competitive, like 3 slots per TBS company so that's not probably gonna happen. Infantry... well... maybe. Most of the NPQs and DORs that I'm seeing right now at MATSG are redesignated to ATC or AMO or Air Intel... Basically they are staying in the wing.

Generally your first salute goes to one of your Sergeant Instructors, at least that is how it was when I commissioned. As far as retired... I don't know, I mean for sentimentality I guess it would work, just not usually the way it's done.

It depends. You could start right away (commission on a Friday, start Monday) or you could wait quite some time. You won't know until you get there. In fact, you may think you are classing up with a company, get through zero week only to not pick up and spend time in Mike Co... YMMV
