I was going to get a set made up, but seems like a waste now... Sad the way traditions are sent to pasture to die.

Congrats to the new Pro-Recs. I was there just a year ago. It's an exciting and awesome time, but don't letup now. Keep working hard and focus on getting ready for OCS. It's no joke. To the non-selects, all hope is not lost. Work on the weak parts of your package and reapply. Pk of...

    Need advice on route

+1. Talk to a Marine OSO or Navy Officer Recruiter. Enlisted recruiters cannot help you. A misdemeanor charge at 18 is possible to get accepted with, but you have to pretty much be a golden boy from that point on. I'm talking awesome grades in school, extra circulars, rock the ASTB and PRT...

    Paying It Forward

Seriously, it sucks for people that this happens to, but you want someone to get a NAMI style physical before they go to OCS? No way. Worry about the shit you can change and don't sweat the stuff our of your control. Sure, something shitty might happen, but 90% of people are fine. You have a...

Brit Chinook pilot shot in face, lands helo, gets DFC.

And it sounds like the Army is recapping them again with new Fox models. Partially for more capability, and partially to replace all of the ones they lost in OEF/OIF. From the stories I've read, those guys so some crazy stuff.

New A-10 Sim for your desktop: One more reason to stay indoors

I tried to wave him off with the lights thinking he didn't have a radio. How wrong I was. He bitched me out on base freq for a solid 10 minutes. I thought I was going to die for a while, but he got distracted by the CBP Predator. He thought it was El Diablo. Thank god.

What do you Aviators and Flight Officers take in the cockpit with you?

It's only a 55oz one, and I can barely shove it into my vest with 32oz of water in it. So it's smaller. But T-34 hops are 2 hrs max so it works for now. I'll re-evaluate when I get farther along if a larger one is a better idea. It goes in the inside pocket of the vest that was designed for...

There will ALWAYS be an England ... ???

I'd hazard a guess that it's two fold. First, we have a large investment in the Gator ships designed for helicopters and STOVL fixed wing assets. It would be bad to not utilize ships we've invested in over the past 30 years, plus the America Class LHA coming and designed around the F-35B...

What do you Aviators and Flight Officers take in the cockpit with you?

I talked to Supply, got one, and gave it to the PR shop. They were specific on which ones were authorized. It's rigged up inside the vest and the drink tube is routed up for use. Fill from my Nalgene. I sweat like a hog up there and it works pretty well.

Army to Navy OCS - Keeping Pay-grade

Not sure about the leave question, but the admin folks are used to processing a decent number of other service USMC folks (that saw the light :) ), so as long as there wasn't a break in service, I *think* you'll keep it. Either way, make sure you bring these items up to your Class Chief as...

There will ALWAYS be an England ... ???

^^ They have the HMS Ocean, but that lacks fixed wing capability. So somewhere between an LPD and LHA. This is pretty nuts. Hopefully our shipbuilding strategy doesn't suffer similar problems.

Army to Navy OCS - Keeping Pay-grade

Congrats on the Pro Rec! You should be paid at the E-6 rate. We had Marines that were prior E-6s and got that pay. It might be a bit wonky at first though, so hopefully you're not paycheck to paycheck if they have to fix it.

Answer is....it's depends. Bunch of factors including why you were whammied, where you came from, what you owe the Navy, and most importantly, the Needs of the Navy (tm). Edit, I should say I've seen dudes I know go Civilian, SWO, OceanO, MSC, and SuppO. A few of those were good deal...

You'd have to check for sure, but misdemeanors aren't automatically disqualifying I believe. I had a theft ticket on my record from when I was 16 and it wasn't an issue. Your situation is more serious though. My advice is to kick ass in college and stay out of trouble for a few years. BDCP...

Were you at the Flight Deck? Might have been a Coastie LT or maybe a prior NFO LT transition (a few floating around). Either way, throw it up for Winged LT+. That's just courtesy. Get more relaxed on a case by case basis, only when told. If you see a winged JG, probably a newly minted multi...

    Sna gpa

You're best bet is to raise your GPA. Short of that, the minimums are the minimums. Flight slots are hard to get and the competition is tough. Even if you do raise you GPA to just above the minimum, you'd better hope the rest of your package is strong to make a difference.

+1 Million. I worked at a General Electric before the Navy and the same thing was told to us by the brass when we got to do meet and greets/lunchins/etc with them. The "Everything Else" is a "Check in the Box" degree for advancement. Executive MBA Programs from a Top 100 school are where you...

    Best Naval Aviation movies

Not sure if it was mentioned above, but the first 25 minutes or so of Rules of Engagement (with Samuel L. M'Fing Jackson) was pretty awesome from an Air Assault standpoint. Yut Yut. The rest of the movie was pretty eh, but worth a watch I suppose.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Neither are required for pilot slots in Navy/USMC. My roommates are Devil Dog pilots and are music, criminal justice, and polisci majors. I'm an Electrical Engineer and it's done me jack squat save for knowing too much about electrical system diagrams and having good study skills.

Interservice Transfer USN to USMC at/after Flight School

Lots of folks asked this when the Navy was cutting SNA spots. Short answer: No. You can always ask the LT CDR in charge of that once you get to NASC though. Stuff changes daily.

UAVs, not just an Air Force gig anymore

Well, SkyNet has landed at KNGP. CBP has a Predator now. Saw him a couple days ago, but didn't have time to bust out the camera. I wonder if this is the eventual replacement for the P-3s they have?

How bad does a PRK waiver look?

PRK is no big deal. Lots of applicants get it before flight school and even some get it later in their career. If you need it, get it, just know the costs.
